Seit 1156 befand sich an dieser Stelle schon eine Pfarrkirche der reichen Salzbürger, der sogenannten »Halloren«, die auch weiterhin in der Klosterkirche ihren Gottesdienst feierten. Der Kirchenpatron Mauritius - aus dem ursprünglichen Namen entstand im Laufe der Zeit durch Kontraktion Moritz - war im 3. Jh.n.Chr. Anführer der Thebäischen Legion gewesen, die sich zum Christentum bekannte und deshalb geschlossen unter dem römischen Kaiser Maximian ihr Martyrium erlitt. Der Heilige erfuhr im Mittelalter einen steten Aufschwung in seiner Verehrung und daneben auch politische Bedeutung. Der Heerführer, der stets in voller Rüstung und aufgrund seiner afrikanischen Herkunft oft dunkelhäutig dargestellt ist, wurde von Kaiser Otto 1. zum Schutzpatron des neu gegründeten Erzbistums Magdeburg sowie zum Patron der deutschen Ostkolonisation und Slawenmissionierung erhoben. Kaiser Otto hatte 937 ein Benediktinerkloster in Magdeburg gegründet, in das er 960 feierlich Mauritiusreliquien übertragen ließ. Dieses Moritz-Kloster bildete den Vorgänger des heutigen Magdeburger Domes. Der Wohlstand Halles, der sich durch zahlreiche Kirchenbauten im Stadtbild auswirkte, wurde durch den Beitritt zur Hanse um 1281 noch gesteigert. Den Reichtum bestimmte in dieser Zeit wesentlich der Salzhandel mit den böhmischen Ländern. Das 13. Jh. brachte für die Stadt außerdem die Bildung verschiedener Innungen und ein modernes Rechtssystem, das in Anlehnung an den Sachsenspiegel verfaßte »Hallesche Recht«. Beachtenswert ist auch die beinahe Verdoppelung der Einwohnerzahl innerhalb von fast 200 Jahren: von 400() um 1300 auf 7000 um 1480. Im 30jährigen Krieg und den Pestjahren des 14. Jhs. hatte Halle schwer zu leiden. Als Kurbrandenburg 1681/82 die Stadt übernahm, war sie der Hälfte ihrer Einwohner beraubt. Halle lag nun an der Grenze zu Kursachsen, wodurch es als Garnisonsstandpunkt interessant wurde. Hugenottische und pfälzische Einwanderer trugen zu einer Erholung der Situation bei, Textil- und Luxusgewerbe überflügelten die bei weitem nicht mehr so bedeutende Salzgewinnung. Zentrum des geistigen Lebens wurde Halle durch die 1694 gegründete Friedrichs-Universität. In dieser Zeit wurden auch eine Vielzahl von 3 gutes Exemplar, ordentlich * Verlag: Passau : Kunstverl.
