Without jacket. Clean, rubbed around spine ends and edges. Foxing on lower edge of text block. Pencilled inscription (to daddy from Paddy) on free endpaper, dated March 28, 1945. Other than this, the interior has no marks or tears, evenly toned. Tight and solid volume. When first published in 1899 by Longmans, Green & Co, it apparently was a great hit; the authors woke up to find themselves famous. One reviewer described it as "a book no self-respecting person could read in a railway-carriage with any regard to decorum". 337 pages. 4.25 x 6.75 inches. 1944, J.M.,Dent & Sons, London, England.
