Philadelphia: Dr. D. Jayne & Son, (1918). 32pp. 6¼ x 3½ inches. Color printed wrappers. Short, closed tear to back cover; faint creasing to leaves throughout; good. A scarce promotional item and recipe cookbook from this ubiquitous Philadelphia patent medicine company, founded in the nineteenth century, wrapped in the trappings of wartime patriotism. From the publisher's preface: "The very great popularity achieved by our previous handbooks 'THE PRESERVING OF FRUITS,' 'HOW TO DO PICKLING' and 'HOW TO KNIT' has induced us to believe that this booklet 'WAR BREADS' will be a welcome source of information on this important subject. It has been our endeavor to produce booklets of real instructive value and permanent usefulness, and, as in the preceding editions, the recipes and instructions in this booklet have all been carefully selected from those suggested by persons qualified to give expert and accurate advice. While primarily the motive of producing these booklets is to bring again to your notice the merits of our preparations, Dr. D. Jayne's Family Medicines, it has been our unremitting effort to supply much needed information of such a kind, and in such a manner, as would be worthy of a business which has seen four great wars in its lifetime, and has enjoyed the confidence and patronage of its millions of friends during the past 88 years. June 1918.".…

First edition of the sixth such manual produced by the banking house of John L. Williams of Richmond, Virginia, promoting investment in the Southern States of America. "Our Manual was the first publication of the sort issued in the South, and now enjoys the distinction, we believe, of being the largest work of its kind published by any Banking House in America. It contains a large amount of valuable information to be found in no other publication, and much of the information which finds its way into print through other mediums only reaches the public some months after it has been presented by us." (Introduction). "Men who think, who look beyond the surface indications and the present moment, will be encouraged by scrutiny and analysis of the facts and conditions in the Southern States to place or continue their investments in those States, because it is evident that the prosperity and growth in all interests and departments of business are based on and secured by natural, original elements which cannot be removed or shaken" (preface, p. iv). Octavo. Engraved title page, large folding map tinted in colour to front pastedown, folding colour plate of the Nicaragua canal at page 282, presentation slip loosely inserted. Original blue-green cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt, twin ruling to boards in blind. Spine ends and corners lightly rubbed, large folding map with a few short tears to folds without loss; a very good copy.…
