Aggiungi al carrello1p., 4to. Good, on aged paper. The letter begins: 'Sir | I shew to you my last little effort which is a Copy from Vertues large Print after the Picture by Holbein now hanging in the Council Chamber of Bridewell Hospital'.( A note at the foot of the page reads: 'The above was engraved for the Purpose of Illustrating Pennant Walpo…le &c'. He notes that the print (not present) was 'engraved as the companion to the last Print I sent you. I am not much inclined to flatter myself that it deserves mens praise but it is a gratification to me to present Proof which I hope to be indulged in when ever I produce any thing new'. The Oxford DNB notes that in 1808 Sherlock unsuccessfully applied for the post of drawing master at the Royal Military Academy, and the present letter would appear to form part of a similar application.
[John Henry Robinson, RA, eminent line engraver noted for his portraits.] Autograph Letter Signed ('J. H. Robinson') to 'Mr Cooke' (the artist Edward William Cooke), on personal matters including Conrad Cooke's health, and plans to meet.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee the entries for Robinson and Cooke in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, folded twice. Addressed to 'My dear Mr Cooke'. Cooke's 'friendly note' about the time he 'proposed setting out for Deal' was received on the Thursday, and the Robinsons are 'glad indeed to hear that your dear Mother is again restore…d to her usual health'. The Robinsons think that 'change of occupation & fresh air together, may have the desired effect both as regards yourself & your son Conrad'. The present season has been a 'trying' one, and Robinson gives a brief description of his own indisposition. He hopes that he can meet Cooke 'on Thursday week, the day before the private view'. A reference to 'Mr & Mrs Cope' follows. Robinson is sorry that the 'programme' Cooke has 'sketched' leaves 'little chance of our seeing you before you return from Stratford'. He ends by informing Cooke that his wife is 'pretty well'. Conrad Cooke's entry in Grace's Guide stresses his electrical work (he designed and installed first electric light on the Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament) and his early promotion of the telephone.

In poor condition: aged and damp stained, with loss to top-right and bottom-right hand corners (in neither case affecting text or design). Laid down on a piece of white paper. Title and small portrait head of Moore surrounded by an ornate calligraphic embellishment.…The poem, of nine heroic couplets arranged in two columns, is engraved in copperplate, and begins 'Lamented Moore! for thee our grief how just' and ends 'Each Soldier mourns his Leader now no more.' In the top left-hand corner is 'Plate 20', but the use of the phrase 'Published as the Act directs' suggests separate publication.

Desnoyers, Aug[us]te (engraver 1779-1857) after F[rançois] Gérard, (painter 1770-1837) in collaboration with Pierre Picquet (calligrapher)Bélisaire [.] Dédié a Son Excellence, Monseigneur Charles Maurice Talleyrand, Ministre des Relations Extéreures. Par son très humble serviteur, Auguste Bouch…er Desnoyers.Talleyrand celebrated as a discerning patron & art collector. F.Gérard Pinx[i]t Aug[us]te Desnoyers Sculp[si]t 1806 Copper engraving: 545 x 400 mm (plate mark); overall size : 605 x 438mm. Untrimmed. Auguste Desnoyers splendid engraving of Gérard s celebrated painting of the victorious Byzantine general Belisarius reduced to beggary by his ungrateful master Justinian consolidated his reputation as an exceptional artist. Gérard s portrait, painted in 18 days in 1795 and exhibited in the same year, had been a sensational success, but in 1806 it mysteriously disappeared from the Galerie du Prince Eugène in Munich. This re-creation of the lost painting dedicated to Talleyrand, the illustrious patron of both artists, is now the sole surviving historical source for the painting once owned by the Beauharnais family. The evocative engraving represents what is also probably the sole public testimony to Talleyrand, as a noted art collector, who had first commissioned Gérard to paint his portrait in 1806, and subsequently asked Desnoyers to produce an engraving of it. Talleyrand thought very highly of his engraved portrait by Desnoyers and is known to have presented it to favoured guests. A very fine impression, in an untrimmed, fresh state. A reproduction of this print in Paris at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Estampes, is illustrated by J.F. Heim, C. Béraud et P. Heim, Les Salons de Peinture de la Révolution française, 1789-1799, Paris, 1989, p. 222.
