Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, first impression, of this collection of mathematical studies by the first female Professor Ordinarius in Switzerland. The present volume is in two parts, the first collecting the author's published work on the generation of symmetric and alternating groups from substitution pairs, and the second offering a previously unpublished study on permutation groups. Piccard (1904-1990) was a Russian and Swiss mathematician. Born in Saint Petersburg, she was the daughter of author Eulalie Piccard, known for her books on the Bolshevik revolution and the rise of the Stalinist police state; the family fled to Switzerland in 1925 to escape the worsening crises. Despite having earned a mathematics degree in Russia, Piccard was obliged to undertake another from the University of Lausanne due to its perceived lack of value. She went on to complete a doctorate on probability in 1929, supervised by Dmitry Mirimanoff, before moving to the University of Neuchâtel, where she became Professor Ordinarius in 1943. Her research concerned set theory, group theory, function theory, the theory of relations, probability theory, and acturial science. Ogilvie & Harvey, Biographical Dictionary of Women in Science II, pp. 1019-20. Octavo. With several tables in the text. Original green printed wrappers, partially unopened. With glassine jacket. Faint creasing to cover edges: a fine copy in fine jacket.
