This book provides a detailed textual analysis of the printed papal indulgences of Pope Nicholas V, which were issued in 1454 and 1455 to procure financial aid from across Europe for the defense of the Kingdom of Cyprus against relentless Ottoman advances. Over time, these printed ind…ulgences have played a pivotal role in historical, bibliographic, and technical discussions about the invention of typography in Mainz by Johannes Gutenberg, since they are among the earliest datable European examples of printing using movable type. This book closely examines the appearance and contents of 28 surviving copies of these papal indulgences, and determines that they were printed from four distinct sets of type. The first two sets were used to print the earliest indulgences in 1454, and the remaining two used to print later indulgences in 1455. Significantly, the analysis demonstrates that the small type used to print the text of the indulgences was produced by cutting individual metal letters, rather than casting them in molds. This revelation challenges long-held assumptions about the development of early printing technologies. The insights offered by this book are invaluable to scholars and collectors interested in the history of printing and the timeline of Johannes Gutenberg's invention. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
