Blue sprinkled edges, somewhat soiled. Covers warped. Hinges cracked, but stitching holding. Occasional minor spotting. Second half of the volume with faint dampstain in upper margin.The Hannås collection 616. Pages 583-602 contain a "förtekning på några fransöska ord som äro nu inblandade uti swenskan/ och kan hende af allom icke rätt förstås. [list of some french words which now are mixed into the swedish language, and may not be properly understood by everyone]" The swedish historian Sten Lindroth calls Spegel's dictionary "a pioneering work, the first of its kind. As early as 1630, the instructions for the antiquarians contained the function to compile a swedish dictionary, and Bureus, Stiernhielm and others took care of the work, but in a geatish-antiquarian spirit and as we have seen the results were meagre. Spegel's Glossarium also gave information about Old Norse words, and, with the aim to compare, German, English, Latin etc., but it is mainly an inventory of the contemporary vocabulary." (Our translation.) This characterization, which ultimately is based on the opinion of the linguist Adolf Noreen, has later been questioned. Bo Ralph, another prominent swedish linguist, writes, for example, that "when you examine Spegel's dictionary from 1712, what strikes you is how strange it is, seen from our perspective. It contains a wide scope of articles, all the way from what we now consider to be quite ordinary articles for a dictionary, to extensive analyses which are close to encyclopedic in character. Endless lines of equivalents or otherwise similar words from other languages are added to many words. The purpose of the dictionary is said to be to facilitate for the new southern swedes, who before the Roskilde peace treaty had been danes, to read the holy scriptures in Swedish. How useful it has been for this task is hard to determine [.]. On the other hand, a lot has been gathered from the vocabulary of the dialects and - most of all - archaic words and expressions from the Old Swedish texts and, probably for most swedes at the time, rather incomprehensible Old Norse words." Ralph summarizes: "Spegel's dictionary is the first swedish dictionary which does not connect with the latin tradition in any obvious way. But it is still misleading to look at it as the first 'modern' swedish dictionary." (Our rough translation.).…
