This took place in 1860 with his friend and fellow Indian army officer James Augustus Grant (1827-1892) on an expedition organized by the Royal Geographic Society and su…pported by the British government. Their purpose was to explore the Victoria Nyanza area and confirm Speke's earlier view that the lake was the source of the White Nile. On 25 September 1860, their caravan left Zanzibar: a force of 217 people, including armed men and porters bearing loads of beads, cloths, and brass wire intended as gifts for safe passage. They arrived at Kazé (today's Tabora, Tanzania) on 24 January 1861, but further headway was hindered by the defection of carriers, local warfare, the rapacity of chiefs who controlled travel through the territory, and a serious illness suffered by Speke. Moving north between lakes Tanganyika and Victoria, and often traveling separately, Speke and Grant encountered further delays in the kingdoms of Mtésa (Mutesa), the ruler of Uganda, and Kamrasi (Kamurasi), the king of Unyoro. On 28 July 1862, Speke reached the point where the White Nile left Lake Victoria, naming it Ripon Falls—and establishing in his mind the veracity of his claim that the river began there Period 3/4 gilt green morocco, some wear the text is a tad loose, not large folding map but a fine colored map of the Nile and the other plates are there as called for, thus the lower price, some rubbing to joints, marbled boards, a special feature is the mounted 1864 obituary of Captain Speke is mouinted on the front leaves with a special notice from the Times on the manner of his death, (A Suicide), however, the London was in denial that fact giving their fantasy account of the accidental death of their hero who discovered the source of the Nile, which he had shared with Sir Richard Burton, both should receive credit, but Speke was first to spot Lake Victoria and leapt to the right answer, Lake Victoria was the source. 'With map and portraits, and numerous illustrations, chiefly from drawings by Captain Grant.' xxx,590 pages, [6 advertising] pages, very well illustrated, 2 maps (1 folding), "John Hanning Speke (May 4, 1827 - September 15, 1864) was an officer in the British Indian army, who made three voyages of exploration to Africa. He also created the Hamitic hypothesis, a suspected major cause of the Rwandan genocide. In 1854 he made his first voyage, joining the already famous Richard Francis Burton on an expedition to Somalia. Despite hardships, the two managed to reach the 'forbidden city' Harar. In 1856, Burton was asked to make a voyage to East Africa, to find the sources of the Nile. He again chose Speke as his companion. The two travelled inland from Zanzibar and discovered Lake Tanganyika. Burton and Speke were separated on Speke solo mission that discovered Lake Victoria and never resolved the confusion. Speke's focus on Lake Victoria as the source of the Nile was proved right by history, even though all the central lakes of Africa are inter related and serve as sources for the many great Rivers of Africa, This book and Burton's Central Lakes of Africa served as the basis for the great feature film entitled: The Mountains of the Moon. I assume this title is the native's coneption of the highlands of central Africa in whose bosom is found all these great lakes.

Speke was to debate Burton on the source, but apparently died of suicide before or perhaps a hunting accident.
