Unser von der griechischen Tradition geprägter Begriff des Wissen - im Umfeld der Lichtmetaphorik entstanden (wissen lat. novi, nosco bzw. griech. eiöevav. heißt "gesehen haben") - nimmt auf die visuelle Wahrnehmung Bezug. Wir haben ein Wissen von etwas, wenn wir es gesehen haben und von daher nicht noch einmal hinschauen müssen. Die Realität als der Bereich, dem wir wirkliches Sein zuschreiben, hängt von daher von unserer Erwartung ab, daß das Beobachtete sich nicht verändert. Über diesen Begriff der Erwartung entwickelt Spencer-Brown den Zusammenhang zu den Begriffen der Wahrscheinlichkeit, der Induktion und den Problemen der Induktionslogik. Der Kern des Buches führt zu den metapysischen Knoten im Begriff der Wahrscheinlichkeit, der im neuzeitlichen Wissenschaftsverständnis eine zentrale Position einnimmt.
