Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. La Canace, composed by Sperone Speroni (1500 - 1588) in the spring of 1542, was to be performed in Padua under the direction of Ruzzante, but his death prevented this from happening. The play was first distributed in manuscript form, before being published in 1546 by Francesco Doni, in a very incorrect edition, then the same year (Venice, Valgrisi), by Giovanni Antonio Clario, who based it on an autograph manuscript, with a dedication to Bernardino Martirano. A third edition appeared in 1550 (Lucca, Busdrago). This tragedy in endecasillabi sciolti (a line of 11 syllables), in five acts concluded by a chorus, develops a particularly horrible plot. Speroni moved away from Aristotle's doctrine by depicting villainous heroes, sparking a debate, to which he responded in the Giudicio sopra la tragedia di Canace, first published in 1550 (Lucca, Busdrago), with the third edition of the play, but which had been circulating in manuscript form since 1543. This critique of style and subject, amplified to the point of becoming a treatise on the art of tragedy, has been attributed to Giovanni Battista Giraldi (1504 - 1573). Speroni responded with an Apologia, to which he devoted himself in 1552-1553, but which was not presented until 1558, during lectures given before the Accademia degli Elevati. Giraldi responded to this Apologia with a Latin epistle. Early Editions. Complete. RAREE1566DTVZ - 08/21 FORN-SHELF-0472-BB-2501-HKREV411.

Rif. Bibl.: Fontanini, I, p. 507. L1065; Gamba 1653.
