Laid in is a wrappers book containing a fourteen page essay on the work by Thompson, a table of contents and twenty-six numbered pages, each giving text from Melville's work corresponding to the twenty-six numbered lithographs by Spruance. Lithograph size: 22 by 16 inches. Booklet size: 16 by 11 inches. Very light rubbing to the edges of the box, else very fine throughout.

Condizione: very good. Benton Murdoch Spruance (illustratore). Three color lithograph, image; 7 5/8 x 13 7/8" sheet; 11 3/8 x 17 5/8", off white wove paper. Mat burn, toning, two registration pin holes and closed 1/2 inch tear lower left, otherwise in very good condition. Artist's initials in the plate. Signed and titled in pencil. Inscribed "Ed. 45." Modernist masterpiece by Spruance. Benton Murdoch Spruance (1904-1967) was an American painter, printmaker and architect. Chair of the Arts Department at Beaver College in Glenside, Pennsylvania, he subsequently chaired the Printmaking Department of the Philadelphia College of Art. Printed by master lithographer, Theodore H. Cuno. In the collection of the Met, Whitney, and PAFA. This is a wonderful example of his work.

Lithograph on cream wove paper 14 x 18 inches (354 x 452mm), full margins. Signed, titled, and numbered 17/33 in pencil, lower margin. Minor mat tone around the perimeter of the image, and with very minor, scattered handling creases, otherwise in very good condition. A fine example of this early, scarce print. [Fine & Looney 85].
