Boards are damptstained and puckered, inner dampstains are scattered and confined to upper, lower and spine margins. Brick and mortar bookshop since 1975!

The autobiography of a man obsessed with sport, Master of the Quorn, the Pytchley, etc., including foxhunting, breeding hounds, game bird shooting, steeplechasing, driving, racing, etc. Very good.

First edition, third printing and just a few months after the first. With 16 fine colourplates from paintings and 75 illustrations on black and white plates and with a map. 4to, in the publisher's original wheat buckram lettered on the upper cover and spine in brown and with decoration of man on horseback in black and blue at the spine foot. lv, 260pp., 4pp. ads. A very good and handsome copy, the text fine, the cloth very mildly mellowed by time but still quite attractive. A BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED CLASSIC OF SEVERAL SPORTING GENRES. Osbaldeston was a first-rate shot, a master of the hounds and horses, fox hunter, world-class cricketer, and famous for his racing abilities, in flat, steeplechase, endurance and carriage races. He was equally well known for his romantic escapades.

Half-Leather. Condizione: Good. This is a handsomely bound example of this 1927 edition of the autobiography of Squire Osbaldeston, who was a fine cricketer, rower and sportsman, especially fox hunting, rowing for Eton and Oxford, as well as being a politician and member of parliament, and high Sheriff of Yorkshire. The book is bound in half red leather with raised bands and hunting devices of a shooter and pointer, top edge gilded, fitted with decorative marbled endpapers, the binding is in nice condition, internally some occasional foxing, some wrinkling to the paper on the plates, there are a couple of neat paper repairs ( see pictures) else in good general condition.

'Squire' George Osbaldeston (1786 - 1866) was a Yorkshire sportsman and politician, though his duties as Whig MP for East Retford came a distant second to his sporting interests. He was an excellent jockey and cricketer, but his abiding passion was fox hunting, and this is the main focus of the book. He was hot-headed, intemperate, trusting, womanising, impecunious, addicted to gambling and probably none too bright; this handsomely produced book, which had not been published before this edition, captures the spirit of a man who was only really happy on a horse.
