Bound by Smith Settle in full goatskin leather over… bevelled boards, blocked with calligraphy by John Andrew with handmaid laid-paper endleaves from the Fabriano Mill. Complete with a 41-page commentary by Andrew Presott. All contained in a Solander Box and in Fine Condition. St Aethelwold was Bishop of Winchester from 963 to 984; his book of ceremonial blessings is one of the most lavishly decorated manuscipts to have survived from Anglo-Saxon England.

Einleitung eines s…päteren Werkes bei, der wir u.a. folgendes entnehmen: Das Benediktional von St. Aethelwold aus der Bibliothek des Herzogs von Devonshire in Chatsworth, das um das Jahr 975-980 zu datieren ist, gilt allgemein als Hauptwerk der Winchester-Schule . Das Benediktional von St. Aethelwold führt uns in das Jahrhundert der normannischen Eroberung. Auf dem Kontinent sind aus diesem Jahrhundert einige grössere Wandmalerein erhalten (Italien, Frankreich, Deutschland). Ferner weisen in Spanien Serien auf Holz gemalter Altartafeln bis in das elfte Jahrhundert zurück. In England fehlt hierzu ein Gegenstück . erst vom 12. Jahrhundert an können wir die Geschichte der englischen Malerei des Mittelalters ernsthaft von der der Miniaturmalerei gesondert betrachten. - Das für die Miniatur- und Buchmalerei sowie kunstgeschichtlich interessante Werk wurde in einen braunen Ledereinband neu gebunden, mit Deckelfilteten und -Goldschrift versehen. - (Eingebundene OBroschur mit kleinen Fehlstellen im Rand).
