Second section originally published in 1893 under title Kaiapohia; the story of a siege. Te Rauparaha was a military leader of the Ngati Toa tribe, originally from the Kawhia region . Facing pressure from northern tribes, Te Rauparaha led his people south , settling in the Kapiti region of the lower North Island around 1820. Establishing a base on Kapiti Island, Te Rauparaha and his allies traded with European ships, acquiring muskets that gave them a military advantage. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent with free courier postage within New Zealand. Using his new military power, Te Rauparaha's ambition extended across the Cook Strait to the South Island, leading to military campaigns against the Ngai Tahu people. The attack on Kaiapohia was the culmination of hostilities between Te Rauparaha's Ngati Toa and the Ngai Tahu tribe. Te Rauparaha visited the Kaiapohia pa on a trading mission but was attacked by the Ngai Tahu, and several of his men were killed. He escaped and swore revenge. In 1830, Te Rauparaha attempted an attack on the pa, but it was too well-fortified. He returned with a large, well-armed war party. The Ngai Tahu defenders trusted the pa's thick palisades to protect them from the muskets. After a three-month siege, Te Rauparaha adapted his tactics. He ordered the attackers to burn the pa's wooden palisades, a tactic previously unknown in Maori warfare. The fire spread, and the Ngati Toa forces swarmed inside, killing many of the defenders. The sacking of Kaiapohia was a blow to the Ngai Tahu and a victory for Te Rauparaha and his allies. All books are sent free by courier postage within New Zealand. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK.
