Which is what Sappington writes of the contributors to this eclectic array of stories, poems, photographs, drawings, confessions, rants, dreams, and various conglomerates of words and images arranged around the notion that the human body (and the representation of it) is a battleground for every social, political, aesthetic, psychological, and sexual conflict imaginable. With input from Dennis Cooper, Leslie Dick, Lynne Tillman, and others, this polyglot book edited by two writers and visual artists addresses race, gender, sexuality, and Captain Jean- Luc Picard. This unique and compelling assemblage of poetry, photography, and prose (both autobiographical and fictional) mixes the work of writers (Dennis Cooper), visual artists (Robert Flynt), activists (Greg Bordowitz), performance artists (Luis Alfaro), and sex workers (Carol Leigh). The point of departure here is the body as worthy-even demanding-of reflection and, according to Sapplington's introduction, "the body as a site of vulnerability." What could dissolve into a pop-psychological discussion of maso-chism instead becomes brave, personal, artistic discourse. Rather than musing indolently on their own physical inadequacies or being disgruntled by society's one-size-fits-all leisure-suit solution, the contributors deftly treat the very act of searching as an intense collaboration with themselves. On the whole, these philosophical testimonies, whether through visual means or the use of language, are pertinent and provocative. The reader participates not as student or voyeur or therapist but as fellow body.

His first solo exhibition was held in 1985 at the Universal Art Gallery in Trinidad, Cuba. Later, important exhibitions of his work include La canción del amor (The Love Song) at the Center for the Development of Visual Arts in Havana, 1995; Spanish Painting and Art Nuevo Suizo (with Ezequiel Suárez) at Aglutinador Space Gallery in Havana, 1998; The History of Cuban Art has been told at La Casona Gallery in Havana, 2000; On the Panamerican Highway at Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica, California, 2000; and African Abstract y otras pinturas románticas (African Abstract and Other Romantic Paintings) at Habana Gallery, 2003. His works are part of public and private collections such as the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana; the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporaneo in Seville, Spain; the Ortega y Gasset Foundation in Madrid, Spain; the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen, Germany; the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; the Arizona State University Art Museum in Tempe, Arizona; the Patchett Collection in California; and the Farber Collection in New York. His death under mysterious circumstances occurred a few days after opening his solo exhibition Lanscape in the Fireplace at the Arizona State University Art Museum, in 2004.

A Survey of John Upton's Photographs is the first survey of John Upton's fine art photography. Upton (b. 1932) studied with Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Minor White, Dorothea Lange, and Edw…ard Weston at the California School of Fine Arts in the early 1950s. In 1955 he was the first resident student of Minor White in Rochester, New York and took courses in the history of photography from famed photo art historian, Beaumont Newhall. In the late-1960s he became Chair of the Photography Department at Orange Coast College, retiring in 1999. In 1976, he coauthored, with Barbara London, the seminal college textbook Photography now in its 12th edition with over 1.5 million copies in print. In essence, John Upton has been in the right place at the right time in the history of twentieth century photography. Upton currently lives and works in Petaluma, California. 69 pages.
