Fore and lower edges untrimmed. Each with the original dust-jacket (red, blue, green and yellow respectively), priced at 18s and 25s. Contents clean, discreet owner name to 'Incense', jackets are bright and fresh showing minor wear to extremities. A fine set. Alongside Gertrude Bell, Stark remains one of the best known female travellers in the Middle East, becoming one of the first westerners to cross the southern Arabian Desert.

Three plain postcards (no illustrations), with stamps and postmarks, all addressed to Gilruth (author of seven crime novels punlished between 1951 and 1963) at 7 Reston Place, Hyde Park, London. The three cards in fair condition, aged and worn, with staining to corners from mounting, and two of the signatures only half-legible through fading. In the first she says that she is in London until the end of February, and 'would like so much' to see her again: 'Could you come in for drinks with a few friends on Tuesday Feb 17th?' The second begins: 'Thank you ever so much. I shall keep the books for my journey & look forward to an orgy of Crime'. She is spending her last week before departure 'rather miserably fending off a flue [sic] relapse - so fear there will be no time for anything'. The last card. written from Italy, reads: 'I must tell you how much I have enjoyed your two books (in the leisure of the Sleeper in the train). They follow all the rules & are full of liveliness & the unexpected - in fact just what I think the detective story should be. How clever to do it!'.

No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Single sheet, folded, inscribed, "'The last of the Wine' & youth & Age enjoying it together - I wish Cranborne & Asolo were nearer to each other! All good memories & wishes from Freya"; mounted facing, a real photograph, 104 x 157mm, of the sender on horseback, subscribed by her "Aleppo 1978". Oxford University's first Goldsmiths' Professor of English Literature (one of the "Inklings") is shown head-and-shoulders; he gazes slightly to his left: a serious and thoughtful study. The Cecils stayed with Freya Stark for a fortnight in early October 1969. "They like to look at villas," she wrote to her friend Dulcie Deuchar, 12 October, from Montoria, "so that we have been lunching and dining at Malcontenta, Fanzolo, Maser, De Lord. In between we made a little two-day expedition to Aquileia, Grado, Udine, and Cividale, where, tucked away in a chapel, rather badly built by the barbarians, is a Lombard bas-relief of the ninth century which B.B. [Bernard Berenson] used to tell me was the most interesting monument in Northern Italy . . . David and Rachel are the pleasantest travelling companions . . . We are now going to Mantova, Sabbioneta and back by Parma or Verona." Both Stark's parents painted; her father, Robert, studied at the Royal College of Art and was principally a sculptor; her mother, Flora (née Florence Stark, a cousin), exhibited at the Royal Academy. Lord David Cecil was painted by Augustus John (1935, portrait now in the Tate), Henry Lamb (1930s) and Emma Sergeant (1982, National Portrait Gallery); the National Portrait Gallery has photographs of him by Cecil Beaton, Roger George Clark, Howard Coster, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Norman Parkinson, Bern Schwartz and Janet Stone.
