fester Einband. 628 S., 44 farb. u. 192 s/w Abb. 4° Kart *neuwertig* Die komplexen Phänomene rund um die Eingliederung Numidiens in den Machtbereich Roms wurden bisher mehrheitlich ausgehend von bipolaren Modellen wie Punisierung, Romanisierung, der Widerstandstheorie oder der Autochthonologie diskutiert. Alternativ hierzu zeichnet die vorliegende Studie basierend auf eigene Feldforschungen und am Fallbeispiel von sechs Mikroregionen das Panorama einer erstaunlich frühen Ausprägung der urbanen Zentren Numidiens nach, die in neuen diachronen Phasenplänen visualisiert wird. Anhand ausgewählter Wohn- und Werkstattbereiche, Heiligtümer und des Grabwesens werden lokal- und regionalspezifische Charakteristika herausgearbeitet, die sich z. T. bis in die Kaiserzeit hielten. Gleichzeitig entstanden Neuschöpfungen von Kult-, Grab-, Keramik- oder Architekturformen, die aber weder mit Resistenz lokaler, noch mit dem Zuzug neuer Gruppen, wie etwa römischer Bürger, zu erklären sind. Die komplexe Dekor- und Formensprache von Bauten und Fundobjekten belegt ebenso wie einige Wirtschaftszeugnisse (Marmorimporte und -exporte, Keramikimitation, Münzdistribution), dass die Städte Numidiens seit dem 2. Jh. v. Chr. bestens in die mediterranen Handelsnetzwerke und kulturellen Transferprozesse eingebunden waren. Besonders zu Mittelitalien bestanden enge Beziehungen, die lange vor der Annexion Numidiens (46 v. Chr.) zu gegenseitiger Einflussnahme auf Politik und Territorium führten. Heterogene Fundkontexte, Distributionsmechanismen und Inschriften zeigen aber, dass deutlich mehr Akteure an diesem Austausch teilnahmen als wie bislang vermutet nur die Könige Numidiens und die republikanischen Feldherren bzw. später die Kaiser. Der gängigen Meinung einer dunklen Epoche Nordafrikas' werden somit eine Fülle neuer Grabungs- und Surveydaten sowie die Reevaluation älterer Forschungsergebnisse gegenübergestellt.
