Softening to spine head and heel, light fraying. Binding tight, solid & square. Text and endpapers clean. Deckled page edges. 357 pp. 6x8 in. (Octavo). Wartime account of the German anti-Nazi underground by two Neu Beginnen organizers writing as Jon B. Jansen and Stefan Weyl, w/ a foreword by Reinhold Niebuhr. Ships from the USA, quickly & w/care. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS & HISTORY: Published in 1943 by J. B. Lippincott Company, The Silent War: The Underground Movement in Germany is an immediate wartime record of internal civilian resistance against the Nazi regime during World War II. Written under the protective pseudonyms Jon B. Jansen and Stefan Weyl by exiled resistance leaders Bernhard Taurer and Georg Eliasberg, the text reveals the operational networks, communication corridors, and clandestine labor organizing maintained by anti-fascist cadres inside the Third Reich. American theologian and public intellectual Reinhold Niebuhr provides a foreword analyzing the moral and political resolve of these underground organizers. Detailed chapters investigate the structural apparatus of the Gestapo, the mechanics of illegal broadsheet printing, courier logistics across closed borders, and sabotage campaigns directed against state infrastructure. Analytical case studies examine the socialist resistance organization Neu Beginnen (New Beginning), documenting civilian opposition during the height of European totalitarian dominance. Taurer and Eliasberg composed the manuscript following their escape to the United States, drawing on primary reports smuggled out of occupied territory to inform Western intelligence and public discourse. J. B. Lippincott Company distributed the volume during active hostilities to counteract Allied misconceptions regarding the absence of internal German opposition. Scholarly interest in mid-century resistance historiography centers on primary-source accounts compiled while the Nazi state was still in power. …
