Das 959 fertig gestellte Bauwerk markiert am Platz des Himmlischen Friedens und i…n direkter Nachbarschaft zur Verbotenen Stadt bis heute einen Meilenstein in der neueren chinesischen Architekturgeschichte. Den Wettbewerb für den Um- und Erweiterungsbau dieses Gebäudes gewannen die Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner gemeinsam mit dem Büro CABR, Peking. Im Dialog mit dem Bauherrn wurde der Entwurf mit dem Ziel überarbeitet, den Neubau in harmonischer Weise auf die Außenwirkung des Altbaus abzustimmen - gleichzeitig jedoch Alt und Neu unterscheidbar zu machen. Die vorliegende Publikation verdeutlicht die deutsch-chinesische Zusammenarbeit am größten Museum der Welt und geht detailliert auf dessen Entstehungsgeschichte ein.
