Aggiungi al carrelloA Savannah stereoview of four African American child chimney sweeps, published by Launey & Goebel as part of their "Southern Views" series. The boys are shown with the tools of the trade, including long brushes and scraping tools, and posed in a studio-like setting for commercial distribution. The verso identifies Launey & Goebe…l as successors to O. P. Havens, one of the important early photographers of Savannah, and advertises their large stock of Southern views. Chimney sweeping was difficult, dirty, and dangerous work, and in the nineteenth century it was often associated with poor children, apprentices, and racialized labor. In the post-Civil War South, photographs like this also turned Black labor into a marketable regional image for outside viewers. Light wear, toning, and soiling; very good. Includes scenes in New Mexico, Colorado, Yellowstone Park, Alaska, Minnesota and Arizona, along with a few unlocated western views - "Camping in the Wild West;" "A Real American Cowboy;" and three Native American views including "Chippewa Squaw Making Birch Canoe," "Chief Blackhaw, Squaw and Papoose;" and "Mounted Sioux Indians, Western Plains." Printed label on verso notes title ("The White Slave") and catalog No. 4518. Although little is known about the context for the image, The Library Company of Philadelphia suggests that the stereoview coul…d have been taken in London, stating, "Adelphi is a London theater where The Octoroon was performed 1861-1862." Other sources speculate the photograph's origins as New York, as one broadside illustration shows a ship from the Clyde Steamship Company, whose hub was in New York City. 7 x 3.5 inches. Very Good plus, with moderate soil on the verso.

Aggiungi al carrello[Western Americana] Three Albumen Stereoview Photographs showing San Francisco city views as well as a Californian Redwood being cut by a band saw. C. 1860s. Mounted to cardboard measuring 7 x 3.5 inches. The first shows a view of Montgomery street from the vantage point of Market, the packed dirt road busy with horse drawn carr…iages and small figures crossing the sidewalks. Dated 1866. The second shows Kearney street, figures visible and 19 century buildings lining the road, their stone fronts ornately crafted. The final view shows a California redwood being cut by a band saw, its trunk laid open to expose the vast history of its many rings. Stereoviews, mounted to cardboard with two identical images side by side, were designed to mimic 3 dimensionality, a technology popular in the early days of photography. California in the early twentieth century was an object of fascination for the rest of the country who heard stories of giant trees and vast landscapes and wanted to see it for themselves, if only in these pictures. The cardboard of one image is slightly bowed from age. Sunning to the other two images. Details are clear and features of the city recognizable. Overall very good condition.

Aggiungi al carrello[Western Americana] Archive of four stereoviews of different locations in the Yosemite Valley. All are sepia-toned and measure 3" x 7". C.a. late 19th - early 20th cent. Images include a view of the Cathedral Spires from Mariposa Trail, the El Capitan peak from Harding's Trail, a boy fishing with El Capitan visible in background…, and a man standing at the precipice of Glacier Point. Yosemite National Park is the third oldest national park in the United States, after Yellowstone and Sequoia. The park was designated in 1890, meaning these stereoviews likely date to before or very shortly after the park's founding. Several of Yosemite's most iconic views are visible in these images, including the granite monolith El Capitan (captioned "El Capitaine") which has since become a popular rock climbing destination. Today Yosemite draws millions of visitors each year for its breathtaking natural beauty and wildlife, but these images show the valley virtually untouched by non-Native settlers. Overall very good condition. Early stereoview images of Yosemite National Park at the dawn of its founding.

Issued in 1892, the two cards place Black domestic and musical life inside a system that de…nied Black equality while making Black bodies as entertainment and spectacle for national consumption. The set bears on the political and cultural aftermath of emancipation, when formal freedom coexisted with disfranchisement, segregation, and a white public sphere that treated racist fantasy as ordinary amusement. Photo archive of 2 albumen stereographs, each 3.5" x 7", United States, D. W. Kilburn, 1892. One card, titled "The Pastoral Visit", shows a staged cabin interior with African American adults and children gathered around a table as an older visitor enters the room; visible details include bare feet, simple stools and chairs, baskets, crockery, framed wall pictures, and a clock, arranged to turn Black domestic life into a legible scene of poverty and rustic living. The second card, titled "Making the old kitchen rattle", shows a staged musical scene with performers posed as comic entertainers, including fiddlers, dancers, and costumed figures in the same staged interior; the exaggerated performance, costume, and facial expressions align the image with blackface minstrel convention seen at during the era. Together, the pair moves from domestic tableau to comic spectacle, showing how published stereoviews circulated both the claim to depict Black life and the openly fabricated ridicule of it. After abolition, Black Americans entered a period of codified exclusion, racial terror, and cultural theft, which popular media helped sustain by presenting Black life as either picturesque performance or comic distortion. Light handling wear; images strong and clear. Overall very good condition. A pointed record of how systemic racism operated not only through law and labor, but through the ordinary published material that taught viewers to accept racial stereotype as entertainment.

Six stereoviews of Middle Eastern cities, settlements, workers, and local inhabitants, circa 1900-1910, document landscapes and daily life across the late Ottoman domains during the formative years of mass-market educational photography. The photographs encompass river agriculture in Mesopotamia, urban pan…oramas of Beirut and Damascus, an Arab sheikh accompanied by an armed bodyguard, and skilled labor in Tarsus. Together they provide visual evidence for the study of Ottoman urban geography, rural settlement, transportation, dress, animal labor, and American representations of the Middle East before the territorial divisions imposed after the First World War. Keystone, founded in Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1892, distributed stereographs for domestic and classroom use and established an Educational Department in 1905, placing geographically distant communities within an interpretive framework designed for American viewers. Six original photographic stereoviews published by the Keystone View Company, circa 1900-1910, each with an extended printed caption on the verso. [1] "Land of Euphrates" shows two boys looking from flat rooftops toward the riverine Mesopotamian landscape, contrasting cultivated ground near the Euphrates with the arid plain beyond; its caption identifies the region through the biblical tradition of the Garden of Eden. [2] An Arab sheikh stands with his horse and an accompanying bodyguard carrying a rifle, preserving details of dress, equestrian culture, and armed personal attendance. [3] A panoramic view of Beirut records a dense concentration of buildings and several vessels offshore, documenting the Mediterranean port's built environment and maritime setting. [4] An Arab village beside the Euphrates shows settlement within the Mesopotamian river valley. [5] A Damascus cityscape places a minaret above clustered rooftops, emphasizing the vertical relationship between religious architecture and surrounding domestic buildings. [6] A blacksmith shoes a buffalo within the streets of Tarsus, recording animal-powered transportation and an urban metalworking trade. Although the printed caption reportedly associates Tarsus with Syria, the city was in Ottoman Cilicia and is now in southern Turkey. Produced before the postwar mandates divided much of the former Ottoman Middle East between British and French administration, the views should not be described as records of modern European colonization; rather, they document places still governed within the Ottoman imperial framework while revealing the biblical, ethnographic, and educational language through which Keystone presented the region abroad. The caption texts are themselves significant secondary evidence, particularly where "Land of Euphrates" interprets Mesopotamian geography through Christian scripture and where broad ethnic labels mediate the identification of pictured subjects. The stereoviews show only minor evidence of age and handling and remain in very good condition. This coherent group combines detailed visual records of six locations and activities with the publisher's original explanatory texts, enabling comparative study of both Ottoman-era environments and their circulation within American visual education.
