Der künstlerische Austausch im Europa des 19. Jh. zeigt die Ambivalenz der europäischen Idee. Bereits damals waren viele Künstler zwischen nationaler Identität und europäischen Grundsätzen hin- und hergerissen. Auf der einen Seite waren die großen Akademien in der Hauptstadt Wien, München und Düsseldorf für den deutschen Raum sowie die Kunstschulen in Paris und Antwerpen Vorbilder und Stationen für junge böhmische Kunststudenten. Demgegenüber stand für böhmische Künstler die Auseinandersetzung mit ihrer Heimat und den anderen slawischen Ländern. Es entstand ein Spannungsfeld aus Zentren und Identitäten, das ein Charakteristikum der österreichischen und damit auch der böhmischen Kunstgeschichte ist. Im Jahre 1800 von der "Gesellschaft patriotischer Kunstfreunde" zur Förderung einer eigenen' böhmischen Kunst gegründet, stand die Prager Kunstakademie im Zentrum der nationalen Identitätsfindung in Böhmen. Die gesellschafts- und kulturpolitische Rolle der Kunstakademie veränderte in dem für Böhmen bedeutsamen Zeitraum zwischen Konstitutionalismus und Neoabsolutismus (1840-1874) ihre Orientierungspunkte - wie, zeigt die vorliegende Arbeit.
