From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Creased at spine, staple holes throughout at top, author's name underlined on cover, else very clean. - From the text: A number of attempts have been made to gain insights into the problems of the Historia Augusta by examining its attitudes to Christianity. Attitudes are mentioned in the plural since, despite J. Straubs efforts, it is impossible to demonstrate any obvious or consistent viewpoint on Christianity in the entire series of biographies. Nevertheless, as will be seen below, there are prejudices which pervade the work and provide some clues to the general attitudes of the author (the singular is used here for purposes of convenience ; no attempt will be made here to address the general problem of single or plural authorship), and it may also be possible to draw some conclusions as to the date through an examination of attitudes to Christians. Since of the eleven or twelve (depending on whether the Letter of Hadrian C) is counted as a unit) explicit references to Christianity in the Historia Augusta, seven or eight also refer to Jews and two mention Samaritans, some mention of the Historia Augusta's, attitudes to these sects is necessary in any discussion of its viewpoints on the Christians. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding rubbed and bumped, name of the author handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: It has recently been stated with respect to the Historia Augusta that knowing which elements . can be used as historical facts is more important than Quellenforschung. It may be stated with as much validity that an equally important factor in the study of an historical work is the attitude of the author to persons and events of the past. Much can thereby be deduced of the general philosophical, political, and social viewpoint of the author. In the case of a fourth-century Roman historian writing of the empire's past, the question of sources assumes particular importance in determining attitude. Questions of Quellenforschung return with a vengeance. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Corner slightly creased in upper right corner, otherwise clean. - From the text: The Itinerarium Alexandri, promising accounts of the campaigns of Alexander the Great and Trajan, presumably the latters Persian campaign, lacks the sections on Trajan because the manuscript breaks off. The first chapter includes a dedication to Constantius II, who, like his forebears, is about to depart for a Persian war. The author states that he, like Varro writing for Cn. Pompeius before the generals Spanish expedition (ch. 6), is writing an exemplary work of exhortation rather than a laudation of deeds already performed, although in chapter four the author mentions the example of the deeds of the emperors father and brother, i.e., Constantine I and Constantine II. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name underlined on title page [Sterz instead of Stertz], brochure rubbed and bumped. - Supplement: Review by Stephen A. Stertz. - From the text: The majority of the references to Roman emperors up to the reign of the Tetrarchs in the extant books of Ammianus Marcellinus history, insofar as they express evaluation, display a viewpoint, apparently derived from Latin historical sources, which several scholars have characterized as senatorial. Thus, three from a total of five references to Gallienus conform with the extremely distorted and negative image of this emperor found in the Historia Augusta and chapter 33 of Aurelius Victor.
