Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, SD; Henry Holt and Company=NAP up until 1944, there's also an Errata page). So how much free time do you have (currently or over the rest of your lifetime?). This book has 3742 numbered pages. It should weigh a half a ton but it actually only weighs 3 lbs. 12 oz. The reason: the paper is very, very thin. So turning them carries a fair amount of risk of creating little tears. The interior of the book has some flaws. A fairly unimportant one: the spine of the front cover, while in solid shape, needs to be glued back onto the spine of the textbook. That's easy enough. If you decide to buy the book and want me to do it, just ask. Another flaw: there is a 2 inch gash on the middle page edge. It creates a 1/2 inch tear off the outer edge of approximately 1350 consecutive pages. These tears do not come anywhere near the print. There is a small gathering of pages at the start of the book which is solidly bound but detached from the textbook. This includes the title page and the first Introduction page. These pages each have a number of edge tears. Following that, the last page of the Introduction is detached and separate, as is the Errata page and a good number of pages of the Table Of Contents, beginning with the first one (page xvii) and going through to page xlii. The Table of Contents runs through to page lxxv. The rest of these pages in the Table of Contents and all the rest of the pages in the book are actually bound quite well, very solidly. Scrolling through them I can relate that they are all nicely tight at their junctures. In fact, the juncture between the rear cover and the last of the blank rear end papers is free of wear. The only place I see a thin space is at the juncture between the last page of the Index of First Lines and the first page of the Index of Titles, however both of these pages are tightly bound from top to bottom. Positively, the pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through them I'm not finding any soiling. I did see one instance of a piece of scotch tape over a tear. There is a crease below the top corner of pretty much all the pages though it does not reach the print. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. The first blank end paper has two stanzas of verse neatly penned with a date above them (January 6th 1916). There's no other writing to be found anywhere in the book. I should also state that all of the pages in the book are present. I went through all of the referenced pages that were detached. As to the covers, you can see them in the first few photos. They look pretty decent. The gilt lettering on the front is still bright, it is only a little faded on the spine. The top and middle cover edges look very good. The two bottom ones each have a few areas of rub-through. The two top corners have small spots of rub-through. You should be able to see everything else in the photos. I failed to mention that the top page edge is gilt. It looks good, clean, a number of smooth scratches. The middle and bottom page edges are also clean. 'Burton Egbert Stevenson was an American author, anthologist, and librarian. He was born in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1872, and attended Princeton University from 1890 to 1893. He created numerous anthologies of verse, familiar quotations, and the like. Many of his anthologies are still in print.'.

Fifth Edition (of a book first published in 1934). Hardcover. Thick small quarto. Bound in full strong light maroon buckram, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Lacks jacket. Endpapers a little foxed, otherwise very good. The largest of the three best-known modern books of quotations (the other two being "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations" and "The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations"). Each book of quotations has its champions (especially among those who don't turn to or trust Mr Goggle for every sought-after saying or phrase!). Bartlett's (from American John Bartlett 1820-1905) is the oldest and longest running of the three books, first published in 1885 and reaching its 18th edition in 2012; the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations started in 1941, compiled by a committee of staff, and reached a 7th edition in 2009. Bartlett's runs to about 1500 pages, and the Oxford runs to about 1000 pages. Stevenson's has always been the "door-stop" of the three, a giant of a book at 2800 pages, and is due in the main to the work of one man, Burton Stevenson (1872-1962) an American author, anthologist and innovatative librarian who saw his great work of compilation and scholarship reach its 5th edition in 1946 (the 9th edition appeared in the late 1960s), but this wonderful collection of quotations appears to rest there--from that time books of quotations have tended to be broken down to specialty areas, i.e. theatrical quotations, political quotations, scientific quotations etc., useful for settling an argument about a specific field, but not much good for holding wide the door. It is worth quoting Steveson's last paragraph in his note to the second edition of his book: "It should be noted that the word "familiar" has been carefully excluded from the title of this book. Apart from the fact that the phrase "familiar quotations" is all but meaningless, it is surely the duty of a compiler to rescue from obscurity sayings which deserve to be preseved either because of their own merit or because they indicate the origin and development of those more widely known. The present compiler has spent a great deal of time in searching for such waifs, and also in retrieving hundreds of others which have hitherto been considered too banal or too vulgar to merit attention, for he has felt that "baloney" and "bonehead" and 'stuffed shirt" deserve a place here no less than "magic casements". This heavy book will cost considerably more to send overseas, than any default postage rate noted.
