Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First edition of Stillman Drake's English translations of two early seventeenth-century polemical works associated with Galileo: the Dialogue of Cecco di Ronchitti of 1605 and the Considerations of Alimberto Mauri of 1606. Both texts arose from the controversy surrounding the new star, or supernova, observed in 1604 and challenge contemporary Aristotelian explanations of the heavens. Drake supplies substantial introductions, explanatory notes, and historical context. The volume is particularly interesting for its presentation of Galileo's early engagement with Aristotelian natural philosophy and for the complex, still-discussed question of authorship surrounding the pseudonymous texts. The Dialogue uses humor and rustic dialogue to ridicule defenders of an unchanging Aristotelian cosmos. Condition: Very Good. Original orange-red floral-patterned cloth boards with solid orange cloth spine and gilt spine lettering. Binding is firm and square. Mild rubbing and shelf wear to the board edges and corners, with slight fraying and cloth wear at the head of the spine. Top edge is lightly dusted. Interior pages appear clean and well preserved, with rough-cut edges. Small handwritten ink notation, apparently "Z-UB 6/2/79," appears along the inner margin of a preliminary leaf. No other ownership markings, underlining, or annotations observed in the photographed portions. No dust jacket, as issued. A handsome fine-press production, printed by Grant Dahlstrom in Pasadena in an edition limited to only 500 copies. The first English edition of these two texts has appeal for collectors of Galileo, astronomy, the Scientific Revolution, philosophy of science, and California fine printing. Ships carefully packed in protective materials. USPS Media Mail is the standard domestic shipping method unless another service is requested. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' 30-day return policy. SCI 2a.…
