Das Zögern des Malers Hieronymus gilt einem Selbstporträt. In seinem armseligen Alltag, belauert von seiner Magd, versucht er sich lange vergeblich daran. Bis es ihm endlich gelingen will, erlebt er alle Unwägbarkeiten des Schöpferischen: das Tasten nach den ersten Linien, eine Suche in Farben und wie sich das Motiv selbstständig macht. Es ist wie bei anderen Bildern, auf denen Hieronymus sonst Dämonen, Landschaften oder das himmlische Jerusalem erfunden hat. Dann aber geschieht das Unerhörte: Er malt sich als Heimatlosen, als Herumtreiber, als Landlooper. Einer der fort will, aber nicht vom Fleck kommt, »mit Augen wie Trichter, in welche die Welt fließt«, in einer Landschaft mit lehmiger Erde und Blütenstaub im Himmel. Noch ist das widerständige Bild nicht fertig, da flüchtet die gemalte Figur bei Nacht aus ihrem Rahmen. Der Landlooper macht sich auf den Weg nach Delft und gerät in die Farbschichten jener Stadtansicht, die wir alle kennen. Er sucht das »Mechelen« auf, die Kneipe des Wirts Vermeer, der als Maler die Dinge aus einem neuartigen Licht holt. Von Stimmen aus Vermeers Bildern, der Spitzenklöpplerin und der Frau mit der Perlenkette, wird der Landlooper in ganz andere Geschichten verstrickt. Und wenn dieser knurrige Bildflüchter dann noch auf Fremde aus anderen Zeiten trifft, auf El Greco, Andy Warhol, Leo Castelli und Gerhard Richter etwa, so soll uns das nicht wundern. Der Landlooper bekommt es mit Malern zu tun, die ihre eigenen Ansichten haben vom Dingfestmachen der Bilder im Kopf und dem Weltfressen mit Farben. Immer wieder mischt sich auch noch Hieronymus ein, der einsame Alte in seinem furiosen Selbstgespräch, der nach der Flucht des Landloopers sein Bild neu malen muss.
