Single sheet, 2 pp., on headed paper '6, William Street, Knightsbridge, S.W.1.'; stain from old adhesion on the reverse covering much of the page, but ful…ly legible; overall about very good. A cordial letter from Florence Stoker declining Sladen's invitation to dinner on account of the winter cold, writing that 'facing a train journey is beyond my courage.' Stoker adds a personal note regarding Sladen's wife: 'I am charmed with your wife, as you say, it is strange that I should come to know her through a third party! Give her my love.' Florence Stoker, widow of the author of Dracula, was at this period the principal guardian of her husband's literary estate, playing a decisive role in its posthumous management and reputation. Letters by her are uncommon in the market. Signed by Author(s).

In the original cream illustrated dust jacket, printed in green and black and feautirng Elizabeth Hepworth's sketches of the Woolfs/wolves and Lehmann?: spine sunned, wear, creasing and chipping to edges, laminate lifting at rear, a number of short closed tears, a little soiled. Very good/ very good A grand association copy of John Lehmann's memoir of his years as managing director of the Hogarth Press (1938-1946), working with Leonard and Virginia Woolf; inscribed to his friend, lover, and travel companion of thirty years, Douglas Stoker, who referred to the author-publisher as 'The Lehmann'. The two men were from very different backgounds. Douglas Stoker (d. 1988) had fled the familial home at 17 and, according to his partner Bruce Cruikshank (in conversation with Lehmann's biographer Adrian Wright): "to all purposes [Stoker lived] as a rent boy. He spread himself around. He had a couple of rooms in Eaton Square where he was kept by various wealthy men in the manner to which he became accustomed" (cited in Wright, 1998). In their early days, Stoker dusted "The Lehmann's ornaments" a few times a week, as well as dining with him weekly, later he travelled with Lehmann and they corresponded until the author's death in 1987, and "up to a few years before Lehmann's death, their relationship was sexual."
