A history of Tauranga county, really brought Evelyn to prominence in the Western Bay of Plenty. Evelyn's book is the standard analytical narrative history book alongside Gifford and Williams 1940 A centennial history of Tauranga. The calibre of Evelyn's book was recognised when it was awarded the 1978-79 J.M. Sherrard award for excellence in regional historical studies.

The author writes extensively on the pre-European days, the eartly settlers ( missionaries and traders) and their contacts with the Maori people. The war with the Maori and the subsequent confiscation of land is thoroughly explored as are the special settlements at Katikati and Te Puke, the development of agriculture and the problms encountered to the rapid growth and expansion that followed WWII. An excellent local history. 489 pages including appendix, bibliography, index, 46 b/w photos, many maps, plans, tables etc, art e/papers. Black hard covers with gilt spine titles NF, ditto text block and pictorial DJ.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 5 volume set in early, full leather, binding. Brown calf with gold borders, raised cords, title labels in red and black, marbled endpapers, marbled fore-edges. A nice handsome set, but with some fading to the gold decorations on the spine, and a chip to the top quarter inch of volume. Volume 3 lacks its rear cover, but all boards are firmly attached to all other volumes. This appears to be a late 19th century binding on the 1827 set. About 400 pages per volume. Text blocks crips and square and tight. Engraved frontispieces in each volume. Volumes 2, 3, 4 and 5 have the name of an early owner "Harold Phelps Stokes" rubberstamped discreetly on the bottom of the front endpaper. Stokes was the son of Anson Stokes, a wealthy NY Banker, and grew up next door to JP Morgan on Madison Ave. He went to Yale and then joined the Hoover administration before going to work for the NY Times, where he was an editorial writer for many year.
