Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 5 volume set in early, full leather, binding. Brown calf with gold borders, raised cords, title labels in red and black, marbled endpapers, marbled fore-edges. A nice handsome set, but with some fading to the gold decorations on the spine, and a chip to the top quarter inch of volume. Volume 3 lacks its rear cover, but all boards are firmly attached to all other volumes. This appears to be a late 19th century binding on the 1827 set. About 400 pages per volume. Text blocks crips and square and tight. Engraved frontispieces in each volume. Volumes 2, 3, 4 and 5 have the name of an early owner "Harold Phelps Stokes" rubberstamped discreetly on the bottom of the front endpaper. Stokes was the son of Anson Stokes, a wealthy NY Banker, and grew up next door to JP Morgan on Madison Ave. He went to Yale and then joined the Hoover administration before going to work for the NY Times, where he was an editorial writer for many year. His older brother was J.G. Phelps Stokes, the famous socialist. Please email with questions or to request photos.
