Condizione: FINE. First thus. An illustrated edition - in both full color and black and white - of Strachey's most famous and influential book, originally published in 1918, and one which revolutionized the writing of biography. His barbed prose removed these revered Victorians from their pedestals as he wrote about them with skepticism rather than reverence, selecting figures from Church, Medicine, Public School, and Empire, - that is, Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Dr. Arnold of Rugby, and General Gordon of Khartoum. Foreword by Frances Partridge. Large format. 192 pp. Fine in a fine dust jacket (as new.).…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First American edition, Stein and day 1969, different jacket, with a black pattern design by Bernard Schleifer. A very, very good copy in a very good jacket.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Poor. 1st Edition. Here is the First Trade Edition of "Portraits in Miniature", by Lytton Strachey, published in 1931 in London by Chatto and Windus. It is a handsome cloth-bound hardcover, the jacket of which was found cut into parts and laid between the covers. We have rescued what we could of it and placed the two jacket panels within a mylar slip-cover to protect them from further wear. The book itself (previously owned) , while displaying a few sings of handling, remains clean and presentable. This was the last book issued by Strachey within his lifetime. Lytton Strachey (1880 - 1932) was one of the founders of The Bloomsbury Group, and remained a key actor within that important group of people for the rest of his life. The Group, which included many of England's finest artistic and literary minds of the time, including Virginia Woolf. The following is excerpted from a section of the jacket's front flap which was also found within the book: |> Mr. Strachey's last book of essays, "Books and Characters", was published nine years ago (1922). His new book [presented here] is homogenous in so far as the essays it contains are, without exception, biographical studies, the genre in which he most excels. One section has for its subject six English historians. It is strange that hitherto no general survey of these historians, who loomed so large in the eyes of their contemporaries, has been made; and it is no exaggeration to say that Mr. Strachey's estimate will have permanent value. In general the studies are shorter than those contained in "Books and Characters", but they are written with Mr. Strachey's characteristic distinction.<| CONTENTS : * Sir John Harrington * Muggleton * John Aubrey * The Life, Illness, and Death of Dr. North * Congreve, Collier, Macaulay, and Mr. Summers * Madame de Sévigné's Cousin * The Sad Death of Dr. Colbatch * The Président de Brosses * James Boswell * The Abbé Morellet * Mary Berry * Madame de Lieven Six English Historians * Hume, Gibbon, Macaulay, Carlyle, Froude, Creighton TITLE : Portraits in Miniature and Other Essays AUTHOR : Lytton Strachey (Giles Lytton Strachey, 1880 - 1932) IMPRINT : Chatto and Windus PLACE : London DATE : 1931 EDITION : First Trade Edition DEDICATION : To Max Beerbohm DETAILS : Trade hardcover; 4 7/8" x 7 7/8", greenish-gray cloth-covered boards and spine with gilt lettering on spine; top text-block edge dyed gray; fore-edge trimmed smooth; bottom edge rough-trimmed; 218 pages; separate front and rear panels of dust-jacket preserved. CONDITION : This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted : EXTERNAL -- Bottom spine extremity slightly compressed; gilt lettering on spine still bright; boards display a few small spots and light scrapes; top text-block edge slightly rubbed. On the whole quite presentable. BINDING -- The book has obviously been read, the leaves opening widely, with the hinges being cracked in a few spots (hinges somewhat separated at the gutter, exposing binding mull, etc.). However no leaves are detached or loose (easy fix for a conservator). INTERIOR -- Mild weathering (or toning) to end-papers. Interior is clean with no marking : no underlining, no marginalia, no signatures. A small book shop label is affixed to the rear paste-down.( Helen Davies MacGlade store in Boston, MA) DUST-JACKET -- The jacket had been separated into three parts, the front and rear panels are now being preserved under a clear mylar sleeve. All things considered : a respectable copy.…
