Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book examines Anglo-Indian relations in the 18th century, focusing on the Rohilla War and the lasting implications of British involvement in the region. The author challenges previous flawed historical accounts to present a more accurate understanding of the events, revealing that the Rohilla War was not a violent conflict but rather a peaceful agreement between the British and the Rohillas. This book reframes the historical narrative and provides new insights into British imperial policy and its impact on India. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaper. Condizione: Good. First Edition. An Original Hand Written Signed Letter from Indian Diplomat Sir John Strachey to Lady Maine Wife of Sir Henry James Maine. Letter dated 1888. The letter to Lady Maine offering her condolences at the death of her husband Sir Henry James Maine and the photograph of him. It is a long letter expressing the virtues of Maine and his relationship with Sir John Strachey. Sir John Strachey 1823-1907 was an English civil servant in British India. Sir Henry James Sumner Maine 1822-1888, was a British Whig comparative jurist and historian. He is famous for the thesis outlined in his book Ancient Law that law and society developed "from status to contract." According to the thesis, in the ancient world individuals were tightly bound by status to traditional groups, while in the modern one, in which individuals are viewed as autonomous agents, they are free to make contracts and form associations with whomever they choose. Because of this thesis, Maine can be seen as one of the forefathers of modern legal anthropology, legal history and sociology of law.Size is 180mm x 115mm. Condition is Good. Light creases and repair to bottom edge of the second page slightly effecting the text. Rear page age toned. More details and Images on request. Ref17707. Signed by Author(s).

Aggiungi al carrelloIndia: Its Administration & Progress by Sir John Strachey is a thorough examination of British India's governance and development, first published in the late 19th/early 20th century. The author draws on his extensive experience as a civil servant and governor in India to analyze how the colonial administration functions, and what outcomes result from its institutions and policies. The book covers a broad range of topics: geography (including the Himalayas), constitutional structure and government organization, civil services, law, justice, finance, taxation, foreign trade, education, demographics, languages, and the army. Strachey explores how these systems have evolved and how they interact with local conditions. He pays particular attention to the ways in which British administrative structures were adapted to Indian society, the challenges of managing a vast and diverse population, and the tradeoffs inherent in imposing a centralized colonial government.Alongside its descriptive work, the book also reflects on "progress"-economic, infrastructural, social, and educational-and considers how well India has improved under colonial rule. Strachey is cognizant of difficulties: balancing revenue generation with investment, maintaining law and order, dealing with local custom, and ensuring legitimacy and stability. Overall, the work serves both as a detailed policy guide of its era and as a window into colonial mindset: what British officials believed effective governance looked like, and how they justified their role in India. The red cloth boards with gilt title on the spine have slight marking and wear on the spine as well as the front with the text block being deckled. The endpapers have toning and some slight foxing. The fold out map is attached and complete.
