In-8° antico (198x125mm), pp. (72), 335, (1), legatura settecentesca in piena pergamena rigida, titolo dorato su tassello al dorso con nervetti passanti alle cuffie. Al frontespizio impresa tipografica allegorica con monogramma dello stampatore sorretto da teschio sormontato da una clessidra entro cornice ornata a grottesche, capolèttere animati silografici. Centinaia di nitidissime riproduzioni di monete e medaglie in silografia (desunte dall'edizione originale) su fondo nero intercalate n.t., disegnate dall'autore sugli originali e incise su legno sotto la direzione di Bernard Salomon, dell'atelier di J. de Tournes. Les 485 médailles gravées avec beaucoup de caractère se détachent toutes sur fond noir d'ordinaire 33 mm de diamètre (R. Brun, Livre illustré au XVI siècle, p. 307). Ex libris applicato al contropiatto anteriore. Sguardie rinnovate. Al frontespizio firme e note di appartenenza ex libris manoscritte da antica mano. Macchia al piede esterno delle pp 65-80 (in alcuni casi lambente molto marginalmente il testo). Più che buon esemplare. Seconda rara edizione latina, la quarta in assoluto (la prima è del 1553, impressa a Lione) di una delle più importanti opere numismatiche del Cinquecento, fra i libri fondanti la moderna storia numismatica. Jacopo de Strada (Mantova, 1507-Vienna, 1588) fu insigne numismatico (contribuì alla costituzione della collezione di medaglie di Jakob Fugger, cui l'Epithome è dedicata), antiquario, pittore, disegnatore abilissimo di medaglie, attivo a Milano, Vienna, Praga; per conto di Ferdinando I, Massimiliano II e Rodolfo II acquistò opere d'arte nell'intera Europa. Roman letter, handsome woodcut incorporating printer's device to t-p, full-page woodcut arms of Johann Jacob Fugger, count of Kirchberg and Weissenhorn (1516-1575) on verso, one large woodcut floriated initial, 488 1/8 page woodcut illustrations of coins depicting emperors from Julius Cesar to Charles V. T-p a bit dusty and soiled, light foxing to outer blank margins of a few initial ll., a little largely slight browning. A good copy, crisp and clean, in C17 reversed sheep, covers single gilt ruled, rubbed, lower outer corner of upper cover repaired, spine with gilt ruled raised bands, upper joint a bit cracked but firm, a.e. sprinkled red. Bookplate of Patricia Milne-Henderson (1935-2019) to front paste-down. A good copy of the first edition, second issue, of this attractively illustrated work on numismatics. It features more than 450 woodcuts of coins and medals in clear impression, all with portraits of Roman emperors beautifully designed in white on a black background. Jacopo de Strada (1507-1588) was an Italian polymath and courtier. He started his career as a goldsmith in Mantua, becoming a renowned architect, artist, antiquarian collector, art dealer and advisor. He worked in the service of pope Paul III in Rome, and at the court of the Holy Roman Emperors Ferdinand I, Maximillian II and Rudolf II. At Augsburg, he entered the circle of the rich art patron Hans Jakob Fugger, to whom this work is dedicated. For Fugger, Strada also realised an impressive suite of 2,000 drawings in pen and ink of Greek and Roman coins. His position at the Emperors' court was high: there is a famous portrait of Strada by Titian (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna), in which he is depicted surrounded with coins and books, and another one by Tintoretto (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). 'Epitome thesauri antiquitatum' is a synthesis of Strada's life-long work on coins, and it "originated in his own collection of coins and medals. It was printed as part of a projected work which was to have been the culmination of his extensive research in European collections as well as his own. Strada particularly notes in his preface to this Epitome the assistance he received from Guillaume Du Choul and Jean Grolier, adding praise of Grolier's magnificent library" (Mortimer). Although, from the title, coins appear to be the main object of this work and Strada talks about the numerous examples he documented, this is not strictly a manual of numismatics. The author does not indicate the coins' currency value, nor their size or weight. Instead, this is an interesting compilation of brief biographies of rulers from Julius Cesar to Charles V Holy Roman Emperor, in which coins are used as the source for the images. Strada's interest in coins is iconographical, and he focuses on describing the portraits, their symbolism and historical significance. The fine woodcuts were realised by Bernard Salomon (15061561), a French painter and engraver specialised in illustrating emblem books. Interestingly, in addition to emperors, the countless coins depicted in this work also show portraits of wives and noblewomen, including Cleopatra VII. Strada was only interested in the genuine material relics of the past and his choice of images indicates his ambition to provide authentic sources: in the 'Epitome' empty circles occasionally appear in lieu of the coins of those rulers of whom he could not find a reliable numismatic image. Exceedingly rare work on mills and their mechanics. First and unique edition, published at the same time as a German edition (the German edition will be republished in 1623), consisting of a dedication, a few explanatory pages but above all of 2 beautiful frontispieces and 100 etchings on double pages (fine issue of the engravings) depicting various types of mechanical systems intended to operate ornamental fountains or animal troughs, to grind grain or other products, to extract ore, to operate saws for cutting wood, to lift bales, to turn roasting ovens (pl. 49), to make paper (pl. 100), etc., all driven by men, beasts, water, wind or counterweight. The plates are engraved by Balthasar Schwan and Eberhard Kiefer after drawings by Jacopo Strada (Mantua 1507-1588 Prague), a pure Renaissance mind of many talents, since he excelled as a goldsmith, machine inventor, numismatist, linguist, art collector and dealer, but above all as a painter and architect in the service of three successive Habsburg emperors: Ferdinand I, Maximilian II and Rudolf II. Ottavio Strada (1550-1612) published the drawings of his uncle (see title) or grandfather (see dedication) almost 30 years after the latter's death, thus lagging behind recent innovations. He dedicated the first part to the Duke of Bavaria Frederick V, whose large coat of arms are printed halfway down the page, and the second to the governors of the United Provinces. The few explanatory pages are by Benjamin Bramer (1588-1652), a German architect and mathematician, who  « espère de monster (Dieu aydant) en bref aussi apprès la publication de toutes les machines de nostre auteur, quelques aultres desseings de ma propre invention ». The beautiful titles by Matthias Merian show Archimedes, Vitruvius, Hermes and Diane as well as small scenes with windmills, watermills, rotation systems, etc. "First edition of Strada work on engineering designs, mills, pumps, and other machinery. Jacobus de Strada was a slightly older contemporary of Ramelli, whose own work on mechanical engineering was published in the year of Strada's death. It is clear that each man's work was independent; Beck suggests that Strada may have been aware of Ramelli's publication and decided against publishing his own designs in deference to the Italian. For whatever reason, publication was posthumous, edited by his grandson Octavius, and the 30-year delay resulted in Strada's designs losing their innovative edge. Nonetheless, the work shows Strada's close attention to detail and illustrates a wide range of machinery and engineering. One mill (plate 90) is described as best for producing ink black and is also ideal for such things as mustard, where the operator needs a certain distance from the burning dust (Cf. T. Beck, Beitraege zur Geschichte des Mashinenbaues, chapter 23.)" A superb copy very well preserved in its elegant blind-stamped contemporary binding.…
