Single print. London. Original hand-coloured aquatint from The Microcosm of London by Rudolf Ackermann; the leading company for the production of aquatints early in the nineteenth century. Pictured here is the dining hall of Lambeth Asylum for Female Orphans or House of Refuge, in the early years of the 19th century. The institution was founded in 1758 by magistrate John Fielding as a means to protect young orphaned and often impoverished girls from descending into a life of vice. A few closed short edge tears outside the plate mark will be hidden by a mount. £65-£95 generally asked for this print. 33 x 27 cm.

No Binding. Condizione: Near Fine. Reprint. An important map of Los Angeles. 6th printing. Map size: 94.2cm x 55.8cm. Includes the Explanatory Data Sheet in buff sleeve. Key to the left hand side of the map. Shows the many faults located in the Los Angeles area including the Newport-Inglewood Fault and the San Andreas Fault. Sleeve nicked, creased and rubbed with a split to the left hand side and with a neat ink name. Explanatory sheet in near fine condition. Map colours bright and clean. Map in very near fine condition indeed. Scarce in any form and a very nice copy indeed.

BM 12202. On piece of wove paper roughly 410 x 280 mm. On lightly aged and spotted paper, with slight wear and small closed tears to extremities. Closely trimmed at head and foot. Repair to blank reverse, which carries a strip of cloth from previous mount. Text and image clear and entire. Image roughly 190 x 120 cm. The letterpress consists of a thirteen-line 'Parody of [Napoleon's] assumed Titles', ending '[.] the sanguinary Coxcomb, Assassin, and Incendiary.to | MAKE PEACE WITH!!!' There follows a six-line explanation, beginning 'This Hieroglyphic Portrait of the DESTROYER is faithfully copied from a German Print, [BM 12177] with the Parody of his assumed Titles. The Hat of the Destroyer represents a discomfited French Eagle, maimed and crouching, after his Conflict with the Eagles of the North. His Visage is composed of the Carcases of the Victims of his Folly and Ambition, [.]'. Can be dated from the fact that printed on Napoleon's jacket is a map of the environs of Leipzig, with other battles in the campaign indicated. The name of the artist is not stated. BM 13489. Landscape. On a piece of wove paper, roughly 215 x 305 mm. Good, on heavily-aged paper and with strip of blue paper mount adhering to the blank reverse. The title 'BERNADOTTE' is at the head, and the publication details and caption at the foot. Shows Bernadotte in martial pose and uniform, riding his white horse over a fearsome serpent. He wears a sash on which are written the words 'Leipsic' and 'Victory'. The caption reads 'Round the head is a wreath of Laurel, which alludes to the brilliant Victories gain'd over the Scourge of the World, the Epaulette head of a lion the Star is formed Of the Trophies taken from the Tyrant, the Thigh is a figure of Liberty holding in Chains the Fiend Slavery, the Sheild the Swedish Cross, with the Sun Shining on the allies who are represented on the Shield, the Horse is in the act of Trampling on a Serpent alluding to the Fallen State of Buonaparte.' A companion piece to the Ackermann/Heath engraving 'BUONAPARTE', BM 12195 (offered separately), and to another portrait, of Alexander I of Russia (not in the British Museum). See Image.

Landscape. On a piece of wove paper. Originally a rectangle roughly 240 x 340 mm, but with an arc cut away beginning in the top left-hand corner and ending at bottom right. This loss has no effect on the text, and only the merest effect on the image, only trimming the outer edge of some very lightly-painted clouds. Apart from this good, on lightly spotted paper, with a thin strip from blue paper mount adhering to the blank reverse. Depicts a ghoulish Bonaparte, with a snake wrapped round his body, a sword of power in his withered hand, and a murderous crown, riding a winged horse of death across the globe. The title 'BUONAPARTE' is at the head, and the publication details and caption at the foot. Caption reads 'The Horse represents Ambition leading on the Fiend, whose body is encompassd. by an Enormous Serpent, the wither'd hand and Arm grasping the broken Sword alludes to The Feeble effort made by Buonaparte to oppose the Conquering arms of the Allies. A Crown Encircles his brows formd of Daggers and Poison Cups alludes to murdering his own Soldiers The Thighs are formd of the Skeletons of the Massacred hosts, the boot a Deamon his guardian Genius'. A companion piece to the Ackermann/Heath engraving 'BERNADOTTE', BM 13489 (offered separately), and to another portrait, of Alexander I of Russia (not in the British Museum).

On a piece of good wove paper, roughly 415 x 260 mm. Dimensions of engraving 180 x 220 mm. On aged paper and with the margins of the leaf trimmed. Laid down along the right hand margin runs a strip of blue paper, 30 x 410 mm, which it may be possible for a professional restorer to remove. This edges the border of the print (which is clear and entire) and overlaps a few letters of the text. Neatly coloured in sombre tones. Beneath the print is the title (which ends 'at Leipsic and its environs.'), and beneath the title is an eleven-line section of text, headed 'THE TWO KINGS OF TERROR.', beginning 'THIS Subject, representing the two Tyrants, viz. the Tyrant BONAPARTE and the Tyrant DEATH, sitting together on the Field of Battle'. Death is seated on a cannon, with one foot on a pile of cannonballs and the other on a broken French eagle, facing a dejected Bonaparte, seated on a drum. In the background the massed ranks of the allies, their four flags flying drive the retreating French from the field. The final four-line paragraph reads 'The above description of the subject appeared in the Sun of Saturday, the 6th of November. These pointed comments arose from the picture being transparent, and from a Circle, indicative of the strength and brotherly union of the Allies, which surmounted the same, composed of gas of brilliant brightness.'
