Illustrated endpapers, a black and white frontispiece, 81 black and white illustrations, and 127 colourised maps throughout. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the… gilt fresh, with a light brown stain to the upper board, and just a little rubbing and bumping to the spine tips. The contents are clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly creased dustwrapper, which has just a hint of toning to the top edge of the flaps, and is otherwise without loss, or tears. Not price-clipped (£30 to the lower front flap). Designed to be the most accessible and comprehensive edition of Herodotus' 'The Histories' in the English language, this landmark text is supplemented with twenty-one appendices written by established Classics scholars, covering topics including the Athenian government, military tactics and weaponry, the Spartan state, oracles and religion, and the position of women. Richly illustrated and annotated throughout. An excellent resource for students and experts alike. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
