About The Book: This book contain The excerpt from "Catholic Missions in Southern India to 1865" discusses the vastness of the British Empire and its possession of the peninsula of Hindostan, which is home to a population of at least 150 million people. The diverse population of India is unified by the influence of the Brahminical religion, which is prevalent throughout the continent. The earliest Christian writers and traditions indicate that St. Thomas the Apostle preached in India, and this is supported by the discovery of artifacts such as a copper plate engraved with half-obliterated letters, a bronze cross, and a white marble slab with a carved cross and dove found in various parts of the country. These discoveries attest to the existence of Christianity in India dating back to ancient times. About The Author: Rev. W. Strickland (1817-1901), He was twelve years military chaplain in India. They wrote many books like, The Jesuit in India; addressed to all who are interested in the foreign missions and Catholic Missions in Southern India to 1865. Thomas William Marshall (18181877) was a Roman Catholic convert from Anglicanism during the Tractarian controversies. In 1847 he became the first inspector of Catholic Schools in Great Britain. He resigned in 1860 after a controversy due to a pamphlet he wrote critical of Anglican missionary work. He published Tabulated Reports on Roman Catholic Schools, inspected in the South and East of England and in South Wales, 1859. A later work by him, Christian Missions; their Agents, their Method, and their Results, 3 vols. London, 1862, went through several editions in the UK and the United States; it was translated into French and other European languages, and Pope Pius IX awarded the author the cross of the Order of St. Gregory. The Title 'Catholic Missions in Southern India to 1865 written/authored/edited by W. Strickland, T. W. M. Marshall', published in the year 2023. A scarce and historically significant account of Catholic missionary activity in Southern India during the height of British imperial expansion. This work documents the structure, progress, and challenges of Catholic missions in India up to 1865, offering contemporary insight into religious, cultural, and political interactions within the colonial framework. It reflects the broader nineteenth-century effort to expand ecclesiastical influence alongside imperial administration, particularly in regions such as Madura. The volume is of particular note as a presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "S. Carbery / Stowton / March 19 1866 / The gift of Lady Power / In remembrance of her Father Brother / the Revd. Walter Clifford S.J. / who was born 1804 & died in India 1844." This inscription provides a clear and traceable connection to Jesuit missionary networks and adds genuine historical and collectible value. Condition: Original cloth binding worn, with fraying at spine ends and rubbing to boards. Internally generally clean with occasional light spotting. Binding remains sound. A good, honest copy with strong historical character. Why This Matters; This is not simply a missionary text ? it is part of the documentary record of how religion and empire operated together in nineteenth-century India. Works like this were instrumental in shaping British and European perceptions of India, while simultaneously influencing policy, education, and conversion strategies on the ground. The presence of a contemporary presentation inscription tied to a Jesuit figure who died in India strengthens the book's authenticity as a lived historical object rather than a purely printed account. Offered by Atlas Rare books. Inscribed by Illustrator(s).
