"Hic Rhodus, hic salta!" - Bekannt ist die antike Geschichte eines Fünfkämpfers, der sich andernorts rühmte, einmal in Rhodos fabelhaft weit gesprungen zu sein. Angesichts dieser Prahlerei wurde der Athlet von den Zuhörerinnen schließlich aufgefordert, seine Leistung hier und jetzt zu wiederholen - hier ist Rhodos, hier springe! Die Redewendung, die im heutigen Sprachgebrauch vor allem als Sprichwort gegen Übertreibung und Angeberei steht, wurde in der Philosophiegeschichte immer wieder auch als Ausdruck der Faktizität angeführt. So beschrieb etwa Hegel bei seinem Gebrauch des Zitats die Aufgabe der Philosophie, sich weniger mit der Möglichkeit als dem Faktum zu beschäftigen. "Hic Rhodus, hic salta!" fordert das Zusammenfallen von Ort und Ereignis. Eben dies scheint Sebastian Stumpf - im Sinne der Kernaussage der antiken Fabel des Aisopos - zum wesentlichen Prinzip mehrerer künstlerischer Projekte gemacht zu haben: So springt er bei der seit 2004 verfolgten Serie Weiße Räume verlassen genau dort, wo er die Arbeit dann später auch in Form einer Videoprojektion zeigt. Obwohl sich bei diesen Arbeiten der Filmraum mit dem realen Präsentationskontext überlagert, ist der performative Akt so gesetzt, dass die Handlung im Off eine unbestimmte außerbildliche Weiterführung erfährt. Wo und wie Sebastian Stumpf aufkommt, wohin er rutscht, ob etwas passiert - wird nicht gezeigt. Ebenso wird die über die Bilddramaturgie aufgebaute Spannung nicht zu einem abschließenden Höhepunkt geführt: Statt der Auflösung einer Szene beginnt von neuem die Vorbereitung eines Ablaufs, der sich in der Präsentation permanent wiederholt. Durch diese Konzeption eröffnet sich Sebastian Stumpf bei jedem seiner Projekte einen transitorischen Raum, in dem sich ein spezieller Schwebezustand zwischen einer filmischen und einer realen Situation einstellt.
