Das vorliegende Album stammt aus dem Besitz eines angehenden Architekten, bei dem es sich aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach um Aurel Sturmhöfel handelt. Die zahlreichen Zeichnungen mit Architekturdetails insbesondere der gotischen Baukunst weisen daraufhin, dass sich hier ein Architekt mit dem Formenkanon vergangener Jahrhunderte au…seinandersetzte, um sich entweder das Repertoire erstmals anzueigenen und seine Fertigkeiten als Zeichner einzuüben oder um sich einen Vorrat für das künftige eigene Schaffen anzulegen. Die Details sind Gebäuden entnommen, die teilweise bezeichnet sind und etwa in Freiburg a. d. Unstrut, Zwickau, Naumburg, Nürnberg, Paris, Worms, Marburg, Erfurt, Antwerpen oder London stehen und zeigen Portale, Chorschranke, Wasserspeier, Säulenkapitelle, Giebel, Fensterabschlüsse, Reliefrosette, Plafonds etc. Der Zeichner hat sich wohl kaum an allen genannten Orten aufgehalten und die Details direkt von den originalen Bauwerken abgezeichnet, sondern er hat sich auch Vorlagenblättern bedient, darauf deutet die gelegentliche Verwendung von Pergaminpapier hin, auf das er in feinen Tuschestrichen die Umrisse der Vorlagen nachgezogen hat. Andere Zeichnungen wiederum sind direkt in Graphit ausgeführt, obwohl es sich auch hierbei um Nachzeichnungen existierender Kunstwerke handelt wie den Jüngling auf stilisiertem Panther (Bl. 5r), die Venus Medici (Bl. 16r) oder die kämpfende Amazone von August Karl Eduard Kiss vor dem Alten Museum in Berlin (Bl. 34v). Dazu gesellen sich einige wenige sehr qualitätvolle Aquarelle. Dürften die meisten Zeichnungen von der Hand dessen stammen, der auch das Album anlegte, so finden sich doch einige wenige Blätter darin, an die er auf anderem Wege gelangt war. Was aber deutet darauf hin, dass es sich um ein Album aus dem Besitz des Architekten Aurel Sturmhöfel handelt? Hierbei kommen vor allem zwei Zeichnungen (Bl. 2r, 3r) des renommierten Hamburger Architekten Martin Haller (1835?1925) ins Spiel, die eine persönliche Widmung Hallers an Aurel Sturmhöfel aufweisen. Vom Empfänger dieser beiden kleinen Blätter lässt sich also auf den Besitzer des Albums schließen, will man nicht annehmen, dass sie hier erst später in Zweitverwendung eingeklebt wurden. Dies ist jedoch sehr unwahrscheinlich, entstanden sie doch in derselben Zeit (1854, 1856) wie das Papier des Albums (1855), woraus man schließen darf, dass sie zeitnah eingeklebt wurden, also von Aurel Sturmhöfel selbst. Hinzu kommt die Fotografie vom Südportal des Meißner Doms, entstanden im August 1854, signiert von Sturmhöfel, womit nur Amandus Sturmhöfel (geb. 1823) gemeint sein kann, der seit 1855 ein `Photographischen Atelier` in Freiberg in Sachsen betrieb. Bei Amandus Sturmhöfel könnte es sich vielleicht um den Bruder von Aurel Sturmhöfel handeln, jedenfalls unterstützt das Blatt ebenfalls die These, dass das Album Aurelius Sturmhöfel gehörte. Desgleichen gilt für eine Zeichnung, die mit `N. Stur` signiert ist, wobei diese Signatur offensichtlich nicht vollständig und das Blatt am rechten Rand beschnitten ist. Eventuell muss man sie zu Sturmhöfel ergänzen, vielleicht ist Nahida Sturmhöfel (1822 - 1889) damit gemeint, die Tochter des in Flatow tätigen Hauptmanns und Kreissteuereinnehmers Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Sturmhöfel. Sie war eine Dichertin und Frauenrechtlerin, lebte seit 1848 in Dresden und war zeitweilig mit dem Berliner Schriftsteller und Kunstkritiker Max Schasler (1819?1903) verheiratet. In welcher Beziehung die hier genannten Mitglieder der Familie Sturmhöfel zueinander stehen, ob sie also eventuell Geschwister waren, müsste erst noch erforscht werden. Auch über Aurel Sturmhöfel selbst weiß man bislang wenig. Sicher ist, dass er Architekt war und später als Stadtbaurat in Magdeburg wirkte. Der Inhalt des Albums deutet auf die Jahre seiner Ausbildung und seines Studiums, damals muss er mit dem später renommierten Hamburger Architekten Martin Haller zusammengetroffen sein, der in Potsdam und Berlin studierte, wo sich also womöglich auch.
