Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good -. This 5 volume set, published in 1819, is a translation of Sully's memoirs which were originally published in 1638, largely overseen by the Duke of Sully himself. This set represents the first English translation to include an appendix. Sully was a close counselor to Henry IV of France. "Historians emphasize Sully's role in building a strong centralized administrative system in France using coercion and highly effective new administrative techniques. While not all of his policies were original, he used them well to revitalize France after the European Religious Wars." (Taken from Wikipedia). All five volumes are in essentially the same condition. Worn and rubbed covers with a rectangular blindstamp design. Each volume contains an illustrated frontispiece. Front and back hinges starting, though intact. Heads and tails are all mildly or moderately chipped. All volumes are free from writing or marginalia within. There is a library bookplate on the inside cover of each volume, as well as some type of leather library label or sticker near the tail (foot). Each spine shows the ghost of what used to be leather title and volume labels. On Volume 4, about half of that label remains. Each volume approximately 500 pages with volumes 1-4 containing a volume-specific appendix at back, and volume 5 containing no appendix, but rather a massive index which is applied to all 5 volumes. Volume 5 also contains "The Trial of Francis Ravaillac For The Murder of King Henry IV, 1610." Overall, this set is in very good condition for it's age. Due to this book's size and/or weight, additional shipping charges may be needed, especially for international orders. Full refund if not satisfied.

Boards. Condizione: Good+. Revised Edition. A New Edition, Carefully Revised. (First published in English in 1756, this is the first edition with the appendix.) Volumes 1-4 (of 5) Uniformly bound - orig. cloth backed boards, marbled end-papers and page edges - paper spine labels, (xxx), (1)-(484), (14), (1)-(474),(6), (1)-502, (10), (1)-554, (14), (1)-(268), index. With an engraved frontis portrait in each volume. Some foxing. Spines worn and covers loose on Vols 1 & 3. Maximilien De Bethune Sully [1560-1641] French statesman. Brought up in the Reformed faith, Maximilien was presented to Henry of Navarre in 1571 and was thereafter attached to the future King of France. After studying at the College of Bourgogne, he studied history and mathematics at the court of Henry of Navarre, and on the outbreak of the Civil War, enlisted in the Protestant Army. He displayed bravery in the field and exhibited a talent as an engineer. In 1583 he served as Henry's special agent in Paris. With the renewal of the Civil War in 1589 he served in the Army and was wounded at the battle of Ivry. As soon as Henry's power was established, Maximilien received rewards in the form of estates and dignities. He was made the sole superintendent of Finances in 1598 and brought order to the countries financial affairs, introducing several influential and important changes dealing with trade and economy. In 1599 Maximilien was appointed Commissioner of Highways and Public Works, Superintendent of Fortifications and Artillery; in 1602 Governor of Mantes, 1604 Governor of Poitou, and in 1606 Duke and Peer of Sully. Sully's influence was widespread; he encouraged agriculture, urged free circulation of produce, promoted stock raising, planned a system of canals and forbade the destruction of the forests. He strengthened the French military establishment, promoting the construction of great lines of defences on the frontiers. He represented Henry at the Court of King James I, arranged Henry's marriage to Marie De Medicis, and helped to put down several revolts by the nobility. Sully's political power and influence ended with assassination of Henry IV in 1620. While he was unpopular with his colleagues, he nonetheless exhibited a gifted executive ability throughout his career as well as an unbending loyalty to the King. Sully was largely responsible for the transformation in France between 1598-1610, when agriculture and commerce improved, and foreign peace and internal order were maintained.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1770 Duke of Sully Memoires France Henry IV Huguenot Utopian Europe 5v SET Map "A very valuable memoire of the history of the reign of Henry IV" Maximlien de Bethune was a 16th-century French statesman who was the first Duke of Sully. Most known for his service under Henry IV of France, Sully left a collection of memoirs which is now a valuable and important work on the history of France during the reign of Henry the Great. Even though 'Memoires' contains many fictitious stories, it is still recognized for its accuracy and portrayal of European royalty. The most controversial section of 'Memoires' is Sully's vision of a utopian society designed for all of Europe. He envisioned a Christian republic that was governed by a 'Very Christian Council' in which all differences were resolved, and a military was complete removed. Some scholars even claim that Sully's plan helped establish what would become the current European Union. According to Tulard, this work is a "very valuable memoire of the history of the reign of Henry IV." Hard Cover. Condizione: Good binding. 12mo. 8 (ads), xii, 509, [1], xii, 454; x, 432; x, 503, [1] pp., frontises, New edition. As issued, in publisher's embossed cloth with title on the spine. Each volume has 14 pages of adverts that function as endpapers, p. 2-8 at the front (p. 2 being the front pastedown) and p. 9-15 (p. 15 being the rear pastedown). A fairly presentable set with wear to the extremities including some fraying with closed tears to the spine ends of a couple volumes; hinges are loose but holding; contents are largely clean. This set belonged to Confederate Colonel John Mosby and to Confederate General Eppa Hunton in turn and bears both names on the first blank page of each volume-the former name being crossed through in ink. In another book from this collection is a pencil note beneath Mosby's name and above Hunton's: "Bought at sale of Col. / Mosby - Warrenton, VA." The pencil note is later and thought to be by Eppa Hunton IV, General Hunton's grandson and from whose library this set was purchased. This inscription is not present in this title, but one might suppose that Hunton bought multiple books at the sale and surely Sully's Memoirs was one of them. As a colonel Eppa Hunton took command of the 8th Virginia Infantry in 1861 and that July under Gen P. T. Beauregard, Hunton's brigade helped to halt a Union advance on Richmond. He distinguished himself at Ball's Bluff and then commanded Pickett's brigade after Pickett's wounding at Gaines' Mill. Hunton led Pickett's men through the balance of the Peninsula Campaign, acquitting himself with distinction. Hunton's brigade was with Pickett at Gettysburg after which he was promoted to brigadier general for his valor. During the last stages of the war, Hunton was involved in battle around Richmond including Cold Harbor and Five Forks. He was captured at Sayler's Creek on August 6, 1865 and was imprisoned for three months at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. But Hunton was more than a Confederate General; after the Civil War, Hunton would rise politically in Reconstruction era Virginia and serve in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Both Mosby and Hunton were from Warrenton, VA where they practiced law and both ultimately served in the United States Government, Mosby in the Department of Justice and Hunton in Congress. Interestingly, Hunton bought Mosby's home, Brentmoor from him in 1877 who had himself purchased it from Virginia Supreme Court justice, James Keith. While Hunton and Mosby traveled in a very tight political and social orbit, there was certainly an adversarial level as after the war most Virginia politicians were staunch Democrats, Mosby became a Republican and was even Grant's campaign manager in Virginia. These volumes point to a side of the owners rounding out what is often a history that is one-sided and neglects to consider their lives after the Civil War. Oxford American National Biography.

Condizione: Fine. First Edition. First edition in English, extra-illustrated copy, of this "instant classic" (Carlile), the autobiography of the minister and advisor to King Henry IV of France. Charlotte Lennox was born into a well-to-do Scottish family that fell upon hard times. Well educated and distinguished early for her poetic precocity - but left to fend for herself financially, she turned to a career in writing. After publishing two novels (THE LIFE OF HARRIOT STUART, based heavily on her own experiences in the American colonies and voyage back to Britain; and THE FEMALE QUIXOTE, for which she is best known today), Lennox took up translation work in hopes of finding a more stable source of income. Among Lennox's most successful productions in her long publishing career, this translation of the Duke of Sully's MEMOIRS also led to an offer of a royal pension for Lennox in gratitude for literary services performed. (She turned it down in favor of her patron finding a government position for her husband instead.) The Duke of Sully (1560-1641) was viewed by many in the Georgian period as an ideal Enlightenment-era statesman, and his MEMOIRS has been read as a literary political treatise. It influence was broad, including on the American Founding Fathers: it features in the 1783 list of books to be imported for the use of Congress, compiled under the leadership of James Madison. This copy has been generously supplemented with nearly 200 engravings, primarily of portraits and landscapes of the figures and places described. As a 17th-century text, via an influential 18th-century translation, in a characteristically deluxe 19th-century extra-illustrated binding, it is a lovely hybrid artifact. Three quarto volumes, 10'' x 7.75'' each. Nineteenth-century full maroon straight-grain morocco by Bayntun, raised bands, elaborately gilt-stamped spines, large gilt cornerpieces and triple-gilt rules to boards. Gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Extra illustrated with 193 additional plates: portraits, landscapes, dramatic scenes, inter alia. Half titles in first two volumes. [4], 540; [4], viii, 555, [1]; viii, 408 pages plus index. Only light rubbing to joints.
