Al-Qasimi had been the ruler of Sharjah since 1972, and would soon take up academic posts at the American University of Sharjah, the University of Sharjah, Exeter University, and Cairo University, with an interest in the modern history of the Gulf. His subject here is an extract from a letter sent by Captain John Malcolm to the Governor General of India, the Earl of Mornington, dated 26 February 1800. He explains how the letter had been found among the papers of Captain Wainwright, commander of the expedition against Ras al Khaimah, in a box at Maggs. He reproduces the text in print and in Arabic translation, and discusses its significance in the context of events at that time, and Malcolm's role.…
