Hardcover. Condizione: Like New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+. Bookplate of James Henry Breasted Jr. on inside front cover. Examines how 19th-century British writers engaged with the rapid industrialization of their era. The book analyzes the shift from a pastoral view to a complex, often ambivalent, literary response to machines?seeing them simultaneously as sources of destructive power and progress. Sussman tracks these themes through the work of several major figures: Thomas Carlyle: Critiqued the encroachment of machines on the spiritual realm in Signs of the Times, viewing mechanization as a threat to the internal soul. Charles Dickens: In novels like Hard Times and Dombey and Son, he explored the dehumanizing effects of industrial urban life and the rhythmic, repetitive nature of mechanized work. John Ruskin & William Morris: Argued for the vitalistic and organic against the mechanical, promoting craftsmanship as a response to machine-made ugliness. Samuel Butler: Used satire in Erewhon to present a world where machines become self-evolving and eventually dominate their human creators. H.G. Wells & Rudyard Kipling: Later chapters often touch on how the late-Victorian era began to integrate the dynamo and technological power into a new kind of modern mythology. The bookplate is significant in that James Henry Breasted Jr. (1908?1983) was an American art historian and museum director. He was the son of the world-renowned Egyptologist James Henry Breasted. He continued the family tradition of high academic achievement, graduating from Princeton University with highest honors in 1932 before pursuing further studies at Heidelberg and Oxford. As director of the Los Angeles County Museum (1946?1951), he bridged European art history with Western U.S. curation and established a lasting national italic handwriting competition.
