Although Whitby was geographically isolated, with access to the rest of the country not an easy matter, this was not the only reason why the port and its immediate surroundings formed the subject matter for the vast majority of his photographs. His obvious love for the place and its people found expression in his work and this may be seen time and again in the examples chosen for this book. In addition to Whitby itself the neighbouring fishing villages of Staithes, Runswick, Sandsend and Robin Hood's Bay and the surrounding farming areas of the Esk Valley and North Yorkshire Moors are all sympathetically portrayed.
