An exhaustive collection of twenty-three of the Collins illustrated pocket edition of the works of Sir Walter Scott. An eminent writer and historian, Scott remains a leading figure in Scottish history, best known for his "Waverly" novels and impressive narrative poems, such as Marmion and The Lady of the Lake. Uniformly bound in the publisher's original maroon leatherette soft covers. The Abbot features a colour postcard tipped in to page 266; The Betrothed features the frontispiece and first two pages of the John S. Brown and Sons Canadian edition of the Holy Bible, folded in two and heavily discoloured and spotted, tipped in to the front of the work; Peveril of the Peak contains an advertisement for the Glasgow-based wholesale musicseller Frank Simpson to page 210. Externally, lovely condition with only minor bumping and rubbing. Light fading along some of the spines, especially to Castle Dangerous and The Bride of Lammermoor. A few marks can be seen across the collection, more prominent to the rear of Rob Roy. Peak and Peveril features slightly heavier loss of cloth along the rear joint, reinforced with tape. Internally, firmly bound. The frontispiece and title page of The Antiquary and Woodstock remain unopened, as does page 386 to The Antiquary. Photographic Review of Reviews: vol. 1,… no. 4, and vol. 2, nos. 14 and 15 (April 15, 1892, Feb. 15, 1893, March 15, 1893). Paper-covered boards, cloth spine (chipped, worn). Without the original wrappers. A little shaken. Pencil notes and marks in various hands in some sections. Photographic Answers was "devoted to discussing current industry literature, techniques, and equipment" (historiccamera site). Most numbers include a section on "Photo-Etching and Collotype," edited by W.T. Wilkinson. Each number treats many topics by various contributors and features a photograph reproduced by collotype (often a portrait of an actress or other celebrity); there are also several halftones. . The photographers include Frank Sutcliffe and H.P. Robinson. Several random plates from the Pictorial Supplement of The Camera (1890 and 1891) are also bound in. The Photographic Review of Reviews was less technically oriented. It collected extracts from various journals and discussed exhibitions, photographic outings, aesthetics, etc. A few pages are devoted to explaining how spirit photographs are made. With a number of halftones. Photographic Answers is extremely scarce: WorldCat locates 1 copy (GEH). This copy has been exquisitely rebound by Sang…orski & Sutcliffe in full brown morocco with 5 raised bands to the spine, title, author and decorations in gilt to the spine. Gilt vignette of an elephant's head to the front board. Gilt border to both the front and rear boards. All edges gilt. Marbled end-papers. The binding is signed Sangorski & Sutcliffe to the bottom edge of the front paste-down. Slight discolouration to the left hand edge of the front board otherwise a fine binding. NB: this is a rebind of the first edition from 1864. This book would grace any library of fine travel books. Sangorski & Sutcliffe are the Rolls Royce of Bookbinding and are widely considered to be one of the most important bookbinding companies of the 20th century. Photographs/scans available upon request.
