It appears as if the half-title and pp. xi-xii of the table of contents in the original 1909 edition were not included in this 1920 anastatic reprint edition, as a digitized copy online does not contain these two leaves, nor does the copy offered here. Contemporary buckram. Paper is of poor quality, with browning in the margins throughout the text. Second, unchanged, edition. This is an anastatic reprint of the original 1909 edition. COPY OF ELMER O. KRAEMER. Kraemer wrote his name on the front flyleaf, the title page, and p. 3. He also wrote his initials E O K over the text on p. 49. He wrote ink notes on p. v and p. x, and entered, in ink, the corrigenda listed on p. 500 into text where they belong. Finally on p. 512 he wrote 40.40 M/ 73 cents [symbol for cents]. Kraemer "was an American chemist whose studies and published results materially aided in the transformation of colloid chemistry from a qualitative to a quantitative science. For eleven years, from 1927 to 1938, he was the leader of research chemists studying fundamental and industrial colloid chemistry problems. . . . In 1921 he was awarded an American Scandinavian Fellowship and he spent a year in Sweden doing research on colloid chemistry with Prof. The Svedberg, the 1926 Nobel laureate in Chemistry. He continued his colloid chemistry research with Herbert Freundlich at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin, Germany before returning to Wisconsin. For most of 1923 he worked on the kino-ultramicroscope and during part of the year assisted Prof. The Svedberg when Svedberg served as a guest lecturer at the University of Wisconsin" (Wikipedia article on Kraemer).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. The Svedberg. Die Existenz der Molekule, Experimentelle Studien. Leipzig, Akademische Verlagsgesellschaft, 1912. Cloth. Very good condition. Chapter I of part II is a very extensive, thorough and very well-referenced work on Brownian motion ("Die Brownsche Bewegung") pp 89-201 in the book of 245pp viii, 244pp, 6.75"x 9", which is still close-in-time to the einsteoin 1905 paper. Svedberg's work ("The Existence of Molecules: Experimental Studies") is a collection of his work on colloids as a connection between visible matter and molecules to demonstrate experimentally that molecules and atoms really exist "Theodor Svedberg was a Swedish chemist and Nobel laureate (1926) for his research on colloids and proteins using the ultracentrifuge. Svedberg was active at Uppsala University from the mid-1900s to late 1940s. While at Uppsala, Svedberg started as a docent before becoming the university's physical chemistry head in 1912."--Wikipedia. "Einstein's theory of Brownian motion--the random movements of small particles in a liquids--explained that the movements are due to collisions between particles and molecules. Theodor Svedberg's studies helped confirm the theory and thus provided evidence of the physical existence of molecules. In 1925 he also developed the ultracentrifuge, which spins mixtures of different substances at very high speeds. The heavier elements are pulled to the outer edge, and various measurements then allow the calculation of the weight of different molecules."--Nobel Prize Foundation 714.3.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. SVEDBERG, THE (1884-1971). Studien zur lehre von den kollioden lösungen. Upsala: Akademische Buchdrucherei, 1907. FIRST EDITION. 4 to. Orig. printed wrappers. vii, (1), 160 pp. Three photolithographed plates + text half-tones and figs., mostly of apparatus. PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by the author to Einar Nordfeldt. Laid in is a November 1926 large format Swedish magazine extract published on the occasion of Svedberg's Nobel Prize. It includes two large brown and white photographs of Svedberg and his family and one of him in his laboratory. Pencil corrections in the text evidently by Svedberg. A little used, but a very good copy. Svedberg received the 1926 Nobel Prize in chemistry: "for his work on disperse systems". "In his doctoral thesis, 'Studien', published in 1907, Svedberg communicated his first results in the field of colloid research. He described a method he had worked out for the production of metal colloids in various media by electric pulverization, with which he had succeeded in producing an entire series of new systems of great interest. His thesis also included investigations of the peculiar movement of colloidal particles called the Brownian movement after the discoverer, the English botanist, Robert Brown." ('Nobel - the man and his prizes', 1962). Some years later, Svedberg invented the ultracentrifuge which became an indispensable aid in studying high molecular substances and their molecular weights.
