Si Levi-Strauss oppose le mythe a la poesie, et en fait une structure independante de la langue, John Scheid et Jesper Svenbro nous montrent au contraire a quel point les… mots, les noms et les objets sont au coeur de l'elaboration du mythe. Car le recit mythique ne se fait pas malgre les mots mais a partir et au moyen d'eux. Ce n'est pas par hasard que le perimetre d'Alexandrie a ete delimite avec de la farine plutot qu'avec de la craie : il fallait marquer le caractere nourricier d'une ville appelee a devenir prospere et cosmopolite. Et si la lyre a le pouvoir de sortir Eurydice des Enfers, c'est parce que selon le recit de son invention, elle a ete concue a partir d'une carapace de tortue morte. Car en donnant voix a la tortue qui etait jusque-la condamnee a demeurer toute sa vie dans sa maison/tombe, et dont le nom, qui doit etre derive du latin tartaruca, signifie >, le mythe inverse le cycle vie/mort en un cycle mort/vie. Ces exemples ne resultent pas d'une heureuse coincidence decouverte apres coup mais illustrent bien la condition, prealable et parfaitement consciente, de l'elaboration du mythe. De la fondation de Carthage aux exploits d'Herakles, en passant par le destin tragique d'Oedipe, John Scheid et Jesper Svenbro nous invitent a une passionnante relecture de grands mythes de l'Antiquite.
