[3], iv, [5], vi-cxlviii, [1], 2-388, [2]; [9], 2-545, [3] (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Later half brown imitation leather over marbled boards with the spines in six compartments, gilt lettering and decorations on the spines; top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Each volume with its errata slip. Completing the title page: "And commonly applied in their discourses from the pulpit: whence the most celebrated of our own poets and others, from the earliest times, have extracted their plots. Translated from the Latin with preliminary observations and copious notes by Rev. Charles Swan. Lowndes 883. A collection of short stories and parables likely written and gathered by a priest around 1300 A.C.E. according to the available historical evidence. An anthology of didactic literature, with stories that most modern readers consider to be macabre and highly unsettling. However, there is a consensus among scholars that these stories inspired Boccaccio, Shakespeare, and other later works of classic literature. Swan's translation was frequently reprinted, and makes the medieval text accessible to English readers. The corners rubbed through and the joints quite worn with the rear joint of volume two split but still holding. An armorial bookplate on each front pastedown.
