PREFACE : It was during an archaeological survey of the hill-top settlement at Dhali Kafkallia in 1970 that I realised how little we knew about Cypriot Middle Bronze Age culture. At that time the textbook for the period was Paul Åström's The Middle Cypriot Bronze Age published in 1957, which due to the nature of the material evidence was almost entirely restricted to the classification of funerary offerings. For this reason Åström's exhaustive study proved of little assistance in the interpretation and dating of the plain, weathered, artifactual assemblage from the fortified settlement at Kafkallia, a fact which convinced me that a complementary study would be of much use to the field archaeologist. After an archaeological interlude in Iran and Afghanistan, a chance to pursue my Cypriot interests presented itself in 1974 when Professor J.R. Carpenter, Director of the Kent State University Expedition to Kalokhorio Khalandrikhas began recruiting staff. The events of that summer led to the abandonment of the project in favour of Episkopi Phaneromeni, previous- ly investigated by Professor S. S. Weinberg, where excavations were carried out between 1975 and 1979 under the auspices of the same university with the writer as Assistant Director. In undertaking this research I have incurred many obligations to numerous people, but to no one am I more beholden than Dr. V. Karageorghis, Director of the Department of Antiquities, without whose support this work would not have been possible. I am also deeply grateful to Professor Carpenter who gave me total access to the Phaneromeni material. This study of the pre-Late Cypriot lithic, metal and terracotta objects from southern Cyprus centres around the material recovered by the Episkopi Phaneromeni excavations and the 1978 Kent State University Archaeological Survey. The results of these investigations were intended to appear in a single volume, but due to delays it was decided that the present work and relevant appendices should appear first as Part 2 of the Kent State University Expedition to Episkopi Phaneromeni. The detailed chronological discussions of the site will be undertaken by the other contributors, Professor J.R. Carpenter and Dr. E.C. Herscher. Nevertheless, in order to provide a broad guideline to the chronology adopted here, Chapter IV provides a brief discussion of this subject.
