Cloth, folio, top edge gilt, gilt titles on cover and spine, 42 cm, xxviii, [1], 135 pp, 162 plates (chiefly by Emery Walker). 269 entries. From the introduction: " It is with a view to calling attention to their documentary importance in relation to pictures and architecture, as well as to their intrinsic beauty and to the acco…mplishment of their makers, that this exhibition has been got together. Its range is from the ninth to the sixteenth century, and it may be confidently asserted that so many splendid examples of the Illuminator's art, and so various in their excellence, have never before been showed in a single room. The present catalogue .contains eight plates which will recall to those who saw the exhibition the general appearance of the upright cases and the relative sizes of the books displayed in them; besides a hundred and fifty-four plates in which a hundred and sixty-five of the books and framed cuttings are reproduced. These are the work of Mr. Emery Walker, with the exception of Plates 60 and 87, which are photogravures by the Autotype Company. They are approximately of the scale of the originals except a very few plates in which the size of the volumes necessitated a reduction of scale. As often as possible the open book is shown, and not only an isolated page." The country or place of origin is first given, then the date, the number of leaves, the number of lines to a page, and the size of the page in inches. Next comes a summary of the contents, then a short account of the decoration and of the pictures or initials exhibited. Finally there are some details relating to the early history and owners of the books, and the shortest possible description of the bindings. "The scribes represented include: Godeman, monk of Winchester (n)' Dominicus, son of Albericus (7), William, of Bury St. Edmunds (23), Willelme (39), Thomas the Norman (94), Johannes Campions and Arnulphus de Camphaing (112), Marinus (116), Michael Lupide Çandiu (143), Cazaninus Johannis de Montebellio (177), Hippolytus of Luna (186), Nicolaus Pollini (187), Joachinus de Gigantibus (192), Johannes de Ecclesia (249), Petrus Antonius Salandus of Reggio (263), and Franciscus Weert (172). The illuminators are a smaller band. They were usually not scholars, and were not encouraged to sign their work. Six only give their names. These are: W. de Brailes (58, 59), Goswin de Lecaucie (112), Nicolaus de Bononia (177, 178), Girolamo da Cremona (118), Benedictus Bordon (196), and Simon Benninck (241). " An ex-library copy with library labels on the spine, and front endpapers, stamps and accession marks on the title-page and half-title; upper half of front joint split, covers rubbed and scuffed, a few minor marks to fore-edges, otherwise contents Good.
