They resemble Greek novels of the first centuries of the Common Era, highlighting intense emotions and focusing on desire, both sacred and profane.Symeon Metaphrastes was celebrated for rescuing martyrdom accounts and saints' biographies that otherwise may have been lost. His Menologion, among the most important Byzantine works, represents the culmination of a well-established tradition of Greek Christian storytelling. A landmark of Byzantine religious and literary culture, the Menologion was revered for centuries-copied in hundreds of manuscripts, recited publicly, and adapted into other medieval languages. This edition presents the first English translation of six Christian novels excerpted from Symeon's text, all of them featuring women who defy social expectations.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the hitherto unpublished Greek text of a fascinating medieval account of an extraordinary sixth-century miracle said to have taken place at Chonae in Phrygia. This book also includes commentary based on other Greek and Latin sources, revealing the fascinating development of the miracle story from its biblical roots through to the late medieval period. The account, preserved in manuscript form, tells of a remarkable event witnessed by the apostles Philip and John. They encountered a venomous serpent in the city of Hierapolis and through divine intervention saw a spring of healing water appear from the ground nearby, followed by the dramatic descent of the Archangel Michael from Heaven to protect the spring and the newly constructed chapel beside it. The author argues that the story is a literary creation of a later period, as there is no hint of it in earlier Christian sources, and the narratives that do exist share obvious similarities with the story of the miracle of Saint Michael at Colossae. The story was most likely invented to create a link between the iconic Archangel Michael and the sacred site at Colossae, thus enhancing the site's prestige and the cult of the Archangel Michael. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …
