Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book traces the remarkable life and times of Swiss-born Johann Sutter, founder of New Helvetia, the first European settlement in California, and iconic figure in the history of the American West. The author traces Sutter's journey from his birth in the Swiss canton of Aargau in 1803 to his arrival in California in 1839 as an agent of the Swiss Society of Colonization. During his tenure as Alcalde (judge) of the Northern District of California, Sutter oversaw military defense of the territory, negotiated treaties with Native American tribes, and purchased Fort Ross from the Russian-American Company. The acquisition of this valuable property included a brass cannon, now enshrined in the collection of the California Pioneers in San Francisco. This book further chronicles Sutter's early acquisition of large tracts of land through dubious land grants, his efforts to build an agricultural and commercial empire, and his role in the Mexican-American War. Through exploration, business ventures, and political intrigue, Sutter shaped the destiny of California, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to fascinate historians and adventurers alike.
