N.p. [Tokyo ?] 1877, Yamato Shinbun]. Small color woodcut print, ca 11 x 16 cm., very good, with a trace of mica dust to the print as issued, signed and sealed "Yoshitoshi Ga," an unusual print, seldom found on the market ! R A R E ! *** *** *** . . . AN UNUSUAL COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT OF ICHIKAWA DANJURO . . Yoshitoshi was doing…newspaper illustrations in the mid-1880's, as an obligation to his friends, rather than out of a financial need, since his current position was secured by good sales of his art work. . *** A lovely print showing the famous actor. His eyes are very strange which was the style to depict actors with bizarre eye pointing in different directions. Nicely done, with embossed Mon on the Kimono the technique called "gaufragge" is seldom done, with a touch of mica dust in the inks gives this print a special sparkly, but low key. The actor holds a hand scroll and has a frown ! Superb example ! This print was included in the Yamato Shimbum [newspaper]. . *** CONDITION: The print is clean, bright, with excellent registry. There is the smallest pin hole at the upper right margin, else no issues worth mention. . *** RARITY: This print is exceptionally rare, and seldom found on the market. Being a print included in the newspaper, very few survived. . *** THIS EXACT RARE PRINT ILLUSTRATED AND DISCUSSED IN SEGI: Between the years 1886 and 1888 Yoshitoshi contributed illustrations to the Yamato Shimbun [1896-1906] and a series of twenty especially fine portrait prints with title: PERSONALITIES OF RECENT TIMES [KINSEI JIMBUTSU SHI] for monthly distribution to subscribers. See Segi below who illustrates this exact print, but not in color. Liberally extracted from p.52. Please visit our website where a digital photo is posted. We also provide a scan of p.52 on our website where you can compare them. . *** SENJAFUDA: Senjafuda literally means: "a thousand shrine tags" are stickers or scraps of paper posted on the gates of shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan. The stickers bear the name of the worshipper, and can be purchased pre-printed with common names at temples and shrines throughout Japan, as well as at stationery stores and video game centres. Senjafuda were originally made from wooden slats, but have been made of paper since the Edo period. . Some famous producers of senjafuda are Hiroshige, Eisen, Kunisada and Kuniyoshi. They mainly produce senjafuda for collectors because the process of ukiyoe printing is very expensive . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: SEGI, Shinichi: YOSHITOSHI THE SPLENDID DECADENT: p.53, illustration 63, and text on p.53. * SENJAFUDA: n-wikipedia-org/wiki/Fuda . *** Color scans of this & most other items are posted to our website.

[Tokyo] 1880, Funzau. A single Oban sheet size 23.5 x 35 cm. print size 21 x 32 cm., very good, strong impression, ex- cellent registry, signed & sealed in the block, good colors, without flaw. S C A R C E This historical prints shows "Minamoto no Yoriyoshi [955- 1082] striking a rock with his bow, from which a clear spring gush…ed forth. The stream is said to have formed the river, Kitagamigawa. The event took place during a drought n 1054 when his troops suffered greatly from thirst." See E. van den Ing et al: BEAUTY & VIOLENCE: JAPANESE PRINTS BY YOSHITOSHI 1839-1892, p.116 entry no. 5 for more details on this print & the series, as well as background information on Yoshitoshi. Minamoto is depicted in full battle Yoroi or armour, with his long bow, and a quiver of arrows. Two aids watch in astonishment as Minamoto pokes among the rocks. His beautiful armour is neatly wovern and tied, his Sae or sword sheath seems to have a host of peacock feathers decorating it. Yoshitosh was the leading exponent of reflecting the true Japanese warrior & Bushi spirit in his prints. Also il- lustrated in DIVINE DEMENTIA as item no. 75. A color scan can be sent by e-mail.

[Tokyo] 1878, Funazu. Single Oban sheet size ca, 23.5 x 35.5 cm., print size 20.7 x 32 cm. very good registry, impression & color, tiny old worm hole in lower left margin print not affected. S C A R C E This is a famous scene from historic annals. "Ashikaga Taka- uji [1305-58] revolted against Go Daigo [1288-1339] in 1335, and i…s depicted looking down from his military post at Nitta [1301-38] who is mounted on horseback, reporting from the front. They fought each other on several occasions." See E. van den Ing et al.: BEAUTY & VIOLENCE JAPANESE PRINTS OF YOSHITOSHI 1839-1892 p.116-118, entry no. 18 covers this and see elsewhere for more on Yoshitoshi & this series. Also il- lustrated in DIVINE DEMENTIA as no. 66. Yoshitoshi distingu- ished himself early on as a skilled painter depicting the Japanese military and Samurai spirit of Bushido. His highly emotional and nationalistic paintings alarmed the Meiji gov- ernment who banned and suppressed many of his works. He is known to express a pure Japanese genre of the highest cali- ber, being untainted by Western influences, except for his use of Western perspective. A color scan can be sent by e-mail. Ready for framing & library display.

[Tokyo] 1879, Funazu. Single Oban sheet size 23 x 35 cm., print size 0.5 x 32 cm., very good, strong impression, fine registry, rebacked on Japanese tissue, small dark spot on the center column else clean. S C A R C E In Yoshitoshi's unmistakable action style, this well crafted and superbly composed work shows the three protagon…ists as they are consumed with a sword fight, one falls to the ground as he is about to be swiftly butchered with a Wakizashi or sword byi Nakatomi. The shock & fear on Oji's face is clear as the last seconds of his life are lost while Nakatomi swings his sword in a life-taking circular motion while displaying an ever so slight smile as he begins to take out his sworn enemy. See E.van den Inge et al: BEAUTY & VIOLENCE p. 116 for series details & background on Yoshitoshi. Illus- trated in Divine Dementia as no. 61. This work uses the most difficult technique of "gauffrage" or block printing without the use of color on the lower garment of Nakatomi, done in a subtle pattern. Some of Yoshitoshi's violent Sam- Samurai prints were supressed and some even banned by the Meiji govenment as "too nationalistic." Yoshitoshi was the leader and most talented painter of the period who depicted the Japanese warrior or Budhido spirit. His works reflect a true Japanese military spirit.

Superb work ! R A R E A spectacular acton work. Shows Koremochi falling backwards blue-blade sword flashing, as he repels the blue-faced… wild haired Devil, while the autumn-red miniature Japanese maple [Momiji] leaves float in the air from the disturbance. Kore- mochi's pinkish-white cloak shows an intricate pattern carv- ed in the blocks, but printed without color by the most dif- ficult and subtle "gauffrage" technique. The Devil avoids Koremachi's dangerous sword in his jump into the air. A most impressive scene, suitable for framing & library display.See E. van den Inge et al: BEAUTY & VIOLENCE JAPANESE PRINTS BY YOSHITOSHI 1839-1892, p.116 & example prints from this ser- ies. Also illustrated in Divine Dementia as no. 84. Yoshi- toshi was the superb master of Samurai action and dramatic prints reflecting Bushido or the Samurai spirit. He excelled at this and has never been surpassed. His prints truly ref- lect the Japanese warrior spirit, many of which were banned during the Meiji era as too 'nationalistic' by the govern- ment. . [Tokyo 1876, Manya]. Tryptich prints, with grass cloth cover very good, clean, strong impression, excellent color, accord- ion folded, as issued, signed in block, clean, bright copy. THIS WORK HAS ELUDED ALL YOSHITOSHI REFERENCE BOOKS ! RARE ! . *** **** *** . .THIS PRINT IS NOT LISTED OR CITED IN ANY REFERENCE BOOKS ! . . . AN O…BSCURE TRIPTYCH, FULL COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT . * A dramatic scene shows the young Yoshinobu [1827-1913], the last Shogun as he escapes, standing boldly on a small skiff as two young Samurai row him to safety, three other vassals one armed with Tangegashima [rifle] another holds the Shogun clan banner. . Yoshinobu stands with determination on his face with one hand on his Katana [sword] the other holds his fan, he and all others wear their Hachimaki [head-bands] in a symbolist "Fighting Spirit" display. . Other vassals are in small skiffs as they all head in the same direction away from the shore to the awaiting Kanyoomaru, a large sailing ship. Yoshinobu returned the reins of Japanese government over to the Emperor. This was a very controversial move, and he was hated by the opposing forces who wanted the Feudal system to continue. The battle of Fushimi in 1866 took place in Kyoto. . In an ironic move, the new Emperor Meiji deprived him of titles Court rank and sent a punitive army to Edo to suppress Yoshinobu. Yoshinobu confined himself in Kan-eiji Temple at Ueno to show his penitence. . By Imperial order, he was removed to Mito, and in 1867 was pardoned, but sent to Shizuoka. Created Prince in 1902. So ended the line of Japanese Shoguns. . An historic work & emotional work. Yoshitoshi was an extreme nationalist, and always supported the concept of the Tokugawa feudalistic period, as well as the Emperor. . His prints have always embodied the Samurai & Nationalistic spirit of Japan. His dramatic & often heroic prints show the important people and events of the time. . This night scene is skillfully executed in dark colors with the white waves of a churning sea beginning to rise, as the smoke of the battle drifts over the sea as all participants look back in sadness as they retreat feling the huge loss of face and shame. . *** RARITY: This three-panel complete work is clearly very RARE ! It is NOT found in any reference books on Yoshitoshi. . A very large example, Oban size ca. 34 x 72 cm, re-backed to reinforce. An unfound example. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCES; . Rengo Press: JAPAN BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA & WHO'S WHO p.1709 for biographical detail. * F.
