"The beginning of high speed photography might be considered to be William Henry Fox Talbot's experiment in 1851. He attached a page of the London Times newspaper to a wheel, which was rotated in front of his wet plate camera in a darkened room. As the wheel rotated, Talbot exposed a few square inches of the newspaper page for about 1/2000th of a second, using spark illumination from Leyden jars. On a 4 x 5 1/2 inch album page, Fox has first signed his name, "Fontaine Fox," then explained, "This is probably the first autograph ever signed in a Bath tub!" Fox was a cartoonist and illustrator best known for the Toonerville Folks comic panel that appeared from 1913 to 1955 in 250 to 300 newspapers across the US. It is about a small town which seemed to operate in its own bubble. The gentle humor of the feature dealt with the antics of the various citizens and featured quasi-realistic situations.
