Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The Japanese Occupation 1942?1945 is a pictorial record of Singapore?s three and a half years under Japanese rule, assembled by Tan Beng Luan and Irene Quah from the collections of the National Archives of Singapore. It begins with a supposedly impregnable British fortress surrendering to an army which had been assured that the Malayan jungle was practically impassable. The Japanese, having neglected to read the appropriate British briefing papers, came down the peninsula on bicycles. Singapore fell on 15 February 1942 and was renamed Syonan-to , meaning ?Light of the South? This sounded admirably radiant on posters, although the daily experience involved military rule, arrests, executions, hunger and a currency depreciating faster than it could be printed. Occupying powers have always shown a touching faith in the ability of a new name to improve conditions beneath it. Through photographs, posters, official documents, maps, notices, ration cards, currency and personal records, the book follows the transformation of the city. British signs disappear, Japanese language lessons arrive and public spaces fill with flags, slogans and instructions concerning the proper enthusiasm for the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Prosperity, unfortunately, remained one of the items in shortest supply. The new administration imposed mass screenings upon the Chinese population as it searched for anti-Japanese elements. The resulting Sook Ching massacres claimed thousands of civilian lives. Men were taken to execution sites and never returned, while families were left with silence in place of information. The photographs and surviving records give these events an immediacy which a tidy paragraph in a general war history cannot provide. Allied servicemen passed into captivity at Changi and elsewhere, later supplying forced labour for projects including the Burma?Thailand Railway. Civilians also faced imprisonment, interrogation by the Kempeitai and the constant danger of being associated with resistance. This is therefore not an album of wartime curiosities, despite containing the sort of stamps, badges and printed ephemera which normally encourage collectors to reach happily for magnifying glasses. Much of the book concerns ordinary survival. Rice, sugar, clothing and medicine become scarce; queues lengthen; the black market flourishes; and Japanese-issued ?banana money? loses value with impressive determination. Families cultivate vegetables, improvise meals and barter possessions while official propaganda continues announcing a prosperous new Asian order. The gap between poster and dinner plate requires no editorial assistance. There are also photographs of schools, labour schemes, public ceremonies, charitable organisations and settlements established beyond the city. Singapore did not cease to contain birthdays, lessons, marriages or work simply because history had become unbearable. Daily life continued in the peculiar wartime manner: altered, narrowed and conducted beneath authorities who could turn the ordinary into the dangerous without notice. Resistance developed both within Singapore and across Malaya, while Allied fortunes gradually changed. By 1945 the confident imagery of conquest had given way to air raids, shortages and approaching defeat. Japan surrendered in August, British forces returned in September and Syonan-to became Singapore again. The old colonial administration resumed operations, though the spectacle of British surrender had permanently damaged its claim to invincibility. Empires, like soufflés, rarely recover completely after collapsing in public. Chiefly illustrated and supported by concise explanatory text, The Japanese Occupation 1942?1945 allows the archive to do much of the speaking. Formal military photographs sit beside identity papers, propaganda, devastated streets and the improvised materials of civilian survival. Together they record not merely what governments announced, but what occupation looked.
